RUST FREE HOLLY HOCK? ALCALTHAEA SUFFRUTESCENS PARKALLEE

I’ve been waiting excitedly for this to flower ….not so excited now it has lol and to add insult to injury, I don’t think it is rust proof either.
This is a hybrid of Alcea rosea (hollyhock) and Althaea officinalis (marsh mallow) and doesn’t have the beauty of either in my opinion. I’m really not that keen, but will give it a chance, the bees certainly love it. It’s about seven – seven and a half feet high. There is a pink one apparently and a mauve, haven’t seen those though.

There seems to be an awful lot of unattractive leaves an for me, at the moment, the flower is rather small and nondescript, it’s colour wishy washy, oh dear I really don’t like it. I’d rather take my chances with some beautiful hollyhocks

I will put a pic on when there are more flowers, but I don’t think I’ll change my mind ….but you never know, it may knock my socks off ;0)

looks very nice - and the gorgeous (cotinus ?) behind is lovely too !!

31 Aug, 2012

Its an unusual flower Ba with those curly middle petals.....maybe a high potash feed next spring would give it a boost......

31 Aug, 2012

Yes Paul, I love the cotinus, especially when the sun goes down behind it and lights it up:-)

31 Aug, 2012

Hi Pam \0/ thanks, I could do with a boost too, maybe I'll try the potash as well:-)

31 Aug, 2012

Let me know if it works please Ba....:0)

31 Aug, 2012

We could go into business Pam, B.A.Pharmaceuticals, whaddya say? I like the sound of it. We need some guinea pigs to try out our tonic, any GOYers out there? we could share the Nobel Prize:-)

31 Aug, 2012

I think thats a brilliant addition to Ba dot com......
But would wild rabbits do I haven't got any guineapigs........

31 Aug, 2012

Pamy Pamy Pamy .... dear oh dear... very kind of you to volunteer the rabbits, but we need HUMAN guinea pigs. I appreciate this health food/science thing is new to you, but they (flippin health and safety) won't let us market the stuff until we prove it won't harm or kill anyone!!! ....I know ...health and safety gone mad ....but that's how careful you gotta be nowadays. I don't suppose you know anybody who would like to share in the glory? We'd take care of them if anything bad happened:-)

31 Aug, 2012

You mean someone who would eat ashes.?.....I've been known to burn the toast.....or even the potatoes at a push but ashes, hmmmm

Wood ash we have in the winter and the last time we tried roasting chestnuts they got cremated so that may work....now how about marketing it in a pepper grinder for that additional roughage in the diet?

"Ba's Booster.......a patented potash potion......"

I can see it now........

I'm sorry to say I don't like your hollyhock either. It's got such a strange looking flower, and a dull colour.
I bought a black one once, but when the flowers opened, they were a pale wishy washy yellow. It ended up in the compost bin lol

31 Aug, 2012

I'm with Hywel,Ba..and sorry,I'm not keen on it either..quite a non descript colour, isn't it? ..but maybe it would be better if I described it as pale and interesting..? you know I'm trying to be tactful here !Lol.

31 Aug, 2012

You really don't like it do you...lol!
Not a fan of them either mainly because of the rust. I always think they have the look of an overgrown weed.
The flower looks ok in close up and if the bees love it - what to do :))
It really is disappointing when you really look forward to a plant flowering then all you feel is major 'let down'. Think we've all been there BA :))

31 Aug, 2012

Pam, I think you're on the right track with B.A's Booster, You can be on the board of B.A.Pharmaceuticals (BAPS). The idea of the grinder is pure genius, everyone's on about roughage in these days of rubbishy processed foods ..... I think this idea has legs:-)
I think BAPS slogan should be 'Nothing artificial in BAPS BOOSTER' perhaps we could compose a jolly jingle for the adverts:-)

31 Aug, 2012

Hi Hywel Bloomer and Scottish, it's a thumbs down from you lot too lol:-)

31 Aug, 2012

Looks like it,Ba..it doesn't seem to have the X Factor..unless it can sing :o)

31 Aug, 2012

Bring out the bloom on your skin and feel fruity all day with the new wonder tonic BAPS BOOSTER!
Contains real potash from organic sources. . Cals per gm o.oo

31 Aug, 2012

Its a shame its a disappointment you never really know until you see the plants in bloom, maybe it all the wet weather that has affected it, but it may put on a better show next year especially with all the boosters that are being recommended;0))

I'm thnking.........

1 Sep, 2012

i love the pretty flower though does look small against such a large plant, my black one hasnt been to big this year because we havent had enough sunshine here in blackpool only rain.
it gets a yes from me for being pretty lol :o))

Ba. Ba I,m in trouble and its all your fault!!!

For some reason my jingles ended up on the 'dear fellow gardeners' blog

Steragram, you're on the right lines, have you got a tune for that? You can join the board too, we'll make our fortunes:-)

1 Sep, 2012

I may give it another year Carole as long as it doesn't get rust, if so ...out it comes:-)

1 Sep, 2012

Sandra, you're the only thumbs up lol:-)

1 Sep, 2012

Lol Pam, I could pop on there and confuse her even more:-)

1 Sep, 2012

Yes she could be our first customer ;0)

1 Sep, 2012

Good thinking... bonus in the post:-)

1 Sep, 2012

Bornagain, I don't think it has a tune - I see it spoken by a beautiful rather breathy blonde, with perhaps a scientist in a white coat doing the last bit...

1 Sep, 2012

Now Steragram, what about a beautiful, breathy blond scientist? cost half as much. I didn't get where I am today by paying two people instead of one:-)

1 Sep, 2012

Ba knows about marketing Stera......she had great success with Ba fashions and the tankini..........

2 Sep, 2012

Thank you Pam, as you know, I don't like to blow my own trumpet:-)

2 Sep, 2012

modest in the extreme my dear ;0))

2 Sep, 2012

NO trumpet ? that rules out any accompaniment for the ad then. Gorgeous scientist it is.

2 Sep, 2012

You're as mad as us steragram:-)

2 Sep, 2012

Mad?. Moi?

3 Sep, 2012

Oui tu:-)

3 Sep, 2012

Et evidement moi aussi :))

3 Sep, 2012

It has a certain something, not quite sure what though, still we cant win them all can we?

3 Sep, 2012

I thought it looked rather nice and at least its leaves are a healthy green....

5 Sep, 2012

It still isn't looking any better Dd lol:-)

6 Sep, 2012
