THE GREAT POPPY DEBATE

I bought some super poppies last year from T & M. Only two survived their journey here after much cosseting. Here is one of them. now I don’t know if it’s my age, but I don’t like them very much, they look all wrong somehow.

Look how coarse the leaves are…it’s not offset by the large flambouyant flowers as they seem to lack grace. They’re stumpier than normal orientals… a deliberate mutant? I’ve seen many lovely orientals and I love opium poppies and the Himalayans…but I don’t like these:-(

Now look at these corn poppies…who would mind these in their garden?

Now the lovely Meconopsis Cambrica, The Welsh poppy.

I rest my case. I lied about it being a great debate…just wanted to moan about the ‘super poppy’ I don’t think it’s super:-)

it looks fine to me, a bit like a big geum????? [i expect im risking a lot saying that on this blog] the only thing i would say is that its not as red as some poppies, i like the really red ones ~ and those little yellow welsh ones.

the colours look amazing in your garden

I can see what you mean, in a way. It is not that really striking full red, is it? But it looks well where it is, with the Geums nearby picking up the colour. Your whole garden, in fact is looking great.

Oh thats interesting you should bring this up BA. Sorry youre not that keen on them. I love oriental poppies - my absolute favourites but I do also have somniferums and welsh poppies (have to be orange though) I thought the big thing with the super poppies was that you had two bursts of flowers rather than just one - maybe theyll grow on you. ...lol

Poppy, I've always loved poppies, it's just that they don't balance...the ratio of flower size to stem. I always had orientals further back, but this would not really be seen there. Maybe it's just in the wrong place:-)

Sticki, the sun was very bright when I took the pics and I've noticed that it seems to have bleached the colour somewhat too:-)

Thanks Ojib, geum totally tangerine...now you're talking lol:-)

29 May, 2012

its a shame when you carefully plan something only to be disappointed through no fault of your own.

29 May, 2012

Well... to tell the truth Sticki...I just stuck it in where there was a space;-)

29 May, 2012

but if you had put it anywhere else the disappointment would be the same, its not how you expected it?

Think Ba. that this is different because it doesnt have that beautiful black centre that these popps. usually have. I actually love them, so big and blousey, I think you prefer more delicate varieties, love your geum there and the red corn poppy. Nice.

29 May, 2012

well I can't see anything wrong with them a beautiful colour.

I like them, I have a patty's plum but it's a bit wishy washy to me so I know how you feel, it's personal taste I think

29 May, 2012

Oh flippin' eck...outnumbered! I'll try again... don't any of you think the stems are too short for the size of flower? :-)

29 May, 2012

i didnt notice that, i doubt if i would even if they were mine ~ i would probably be pleased cos i need shorter things in this garden

BUT you are the style expert so if you say they are too short then im sure they must be.

29 May, 2012

I know what you mean,Ba..I'm not sure if I like them or not, although they look nice among your other flowers..:o)

29 May, 2012

I like them - I'm sure mine all look like this - must have a good look tomorrow. They look absolutely amazing with the Geum! Bought myself a little dwarf Geum the other day for the front of the border - hoping it will do as well as the others in my garden.

29 May, 2012

They are certainly dramatic Ba, and quite take centre stage like a diva, but they still look great in your colour scheme, and I love your garden whatever you squeeze into it! lol.. Hello again by the way..\0/xxx

29 May, 2012

Well Ba, in my humble opinion, Lol...
I think they are a lovely colour (although you say it is not the true colour in the pic) But I think they look out of place because all your other planting looks delicate & these are certainly not, could be the angle of the shot.
I think these type of poppies look nice in a big clump on their own.
I dont think we will give then coverage at our show next year! Lol.

Smelling salts please....someone pick me up from the floor....is that really you Flori?...I've long dreamt of this moment...I can't believe it...you're a figment of my imagination....are you here to stay, or ready to sneak off again when the summer ends? Welcome back Flori my fair weather friend \0/:-)))))

Willi, you've hit the nail on the head...you can be my style consultant at B.A. Garden Films Ltd and chief commentator at Chelsea next year....You're right...I'll move them (not yet though) :-)

30 May, 2012

hello flori, nice to see you again

30 May, 2012

Don't give her a big head Sticki:-)

30 May, 2012

she couldnt have that! any more than you would!! [even with that very pretty garden you have]

30 May, 2012

I think Willi is right Ba, they look like a gang of blousey hussies that have invaded a rather refined garden party.
The ones I have, can`t remember the name, but big red ones with very thistle like leaves look aweful, they seem to be all foliage and the blooms look thick and stunted. They have to go - at least yours are a nice colour and can be moved to another part of the garden.

30 May, 2012

\o/ hope you don't mind me giving Flori a wave,Ba..so nice to hear from you again..hope you stay a while ..
We've missed you :o) xx

Thanks BA, we will sort out the finer details of the contract soon, Lol.
