Hi Sadie- well where to start? No wont harm tree if dead damaged branches removed now I usually cut back to about 2 " from main trunk as cutting flush can risk open wound ripe for infection.Cutting long can see lots of new shoots resulting in over - crowding. If tree fruiting poorly no harm in opening up crown of tree by removing branches that crossover. The grubs
you descibe sound like codling moth - maggot like in appearance?ICI / Murphys make a spray that applied twice now and again in 4 weeks to control.Sorry long chemical name fenitro? cant recall.Hope this helps.

Hi Vicky welcome to goy - as you say this all over garden so lets hope nothing fungal .Sid v. good with soil conditions. This
garden new to you ? Garden lime powder used to be commonly used to break up heavy clay soils esp on vegetable patches. Not so good for planting shrubs and flowers as those that like acidic clay soil not so keen on lime - alkaline. You could try a soil test kit.Put some soil free of' 'ash' to test - then test ash without soil.Soil will react to show acid if ash is lime this will react as alkaline.Hope this helps!

Dont despair Martin as you know youd probably be pruning back the new leaf growth soon anyway. Then prune harder Feb/March so this shouldnt affect next years flowers.
