Jacque, If I put these three into nicer pots I think all the other two hundred or so conifers that are just hanging around in similar pots might get a bit jealous :o)

Skippy - right now I have no idea where they will go. :o)

Yes I did. :o)

My, that was quick terratoonie,These three conifers were impulse purchases, I only went down to the Garden Centre to buy some grit and sand for making up some cuttings compost, and what's more unusual I rarely buy conifers from Garden Centres or nurseries.

Possibly something to do with the poor summer ?

On question - no flowers

Hi Fleurdemai, very rare, only around in a handful of private collections

Terratoonie, depends on the plant, Cotinus 'Grace' is another that benefits from hard pruning and produces larger leaves as a result.

Hi Jacque,
if the needle yellowing and dropping is predominately within the interior of the tree and not on the currant years growth, then the probable cause is either some sort of spruce aphid or spider mite. You will need to spray with a systemic insecticide ( if you can still buy them) or a contact spray that will deal with spider mites, and I would also recommend you spray again sometime just after Xmas especially if we have another mild winter.

Catalpa can be grown as shrubs, just need to prune them back hard enough each year, in fact the leaves are often larger when given this treatment.

Will do Terratoonie, just a bit short of time at the moment, but I will get round to it as soon as I can.

Doctorbob,
With all due respect your comments are incorrect and a little confusing. I will try and explain as simply as I can.
First your reference to Cupressus lawsoniana is extremely outdated nomenclature.
Chamaecyparis and Cupressus are both the genus or genera.
Chamaecyparis lawsoniana, and Cupressus macrocarpa are both the species. Chamaecyparis, Cupressus, and x Cupressocyparis are all cypresses and members of the Cupressaceae family.
There is no Cupressus Lawsoniana Castle wellen or Cupressus Macrocarpa Luten, but there is a
x Cupressocyparis leylandii 'Castlewellan', and a Cupressus macrocarpa 'Lutea'.

Typo ! Larix Peter not Laris

correction - name is Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Aurea Densa', a plant in my collection is 5ft tall at 20yrs old. not really much use as a proper hedge.

Flcrazy, the dark green waterfall is Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Rijnhof', there is a better pic on my photos, page 9, top line 3rd right.

Flcrazy, used to grow it a few years ago, but now grow the much improved form Cupressus glabra 'Spire' which I refer to being a 'straight up and down weeper '.

23 Sep, 2008

Terratoonie, the low growing plants are all heathers, the golden/yellow heathers are a variety of the winter heath Erica carnea, the purple ones are summer flowering Calluna vulgaris varieties.

Ajay, a reply to my query would have been appreciated.

Barbara, hope you don't mind the correction - Lawson Cypress.

So those that can have a link from their website to GOY, would it not also be a good idea to be able to have a reciprocal link from our own GOY pages to our websites (if we have one) ?

Ssdcreations - Get over yourself...everyone is entiltled to their opinion, I for one am not interested in putting anything onto or into my soil that is not organic, if someone else wants to that's their prerogative, we were asked our views on the subject and we gave them, you should respect that.

8 Sep, 2008

Hi Janey, no, firs is not short for conifers, firs are a common collective name for the species Abies, which are of course conifers. the photo is likely to be 'Wima' which is recent years has surpassed 'Goldcrest' for use in containers because of its narrow habit.
