FROSTY FOLIAGE - of the coniferous kind

A few more photos taken today, 3rd January 2010 showing the effect of frost on some of the conifers in my garden.

Abies concolor ‘Eagle Point’

Juniperus squamata ‘Blue Carpet’

Picea abies ‘Oldenburg’

Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Curly Tops’

Larix decidua ‘Pendula’

Pinus strobus ‘Green Twist’

Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Stoneham’ – about 25yrs old, and only 2ft high x 3ft wide

Picea bicolor ‘Prostrata’

Cupressus lusitanica ’Brice’s Weeping’

Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Gnome’

Thuja plicata ‘Holly Turner’

Chamaecyparis pisifera filifera ‘Nana’

So there you go! infinitely more interesting at this time of year, than looking at a load of dead perennial foliage… don’t you think ?? :0)))

More great pictures of your wonderful plants.
I now know that Picea have to be my favourite conifers !

Yes they are lovely Bluespruce wish I had more room. The `Pendula` made me giggle it looks like a very badly made wig.

Well Stroller, you could take the flowers out of that lovely little circular bed at the front of your cottage, and replace them with a nice selection of dwarf conifers....how good would that look! :0)))

Very effective they all look with that frosting.

I love your photos Bs. Your conifers look stunning at any time of year, but winter seems to be their 'star turn' time alright. Beautiful. Love the Chamaecyparis pisifera 'nana specially, but then it would be difficult to have a favourite.

Wow! What a heavenly sight.........love the frosted garden...just adds a silver shadow...:o) My favourite is the Stoneham...so compact and shapely, it looks like it's been there forever. And there's the Miscanthus...now I can see it's height
perfect!...:o) Yes I agree Jacque, amazing all year round, it would be great to have a conifer garden.

wonderful bs. My conifers have another blanket of snow that had to be shaken off this morning.

Yes, Yes, heartily agree with you, to me this is where conifers come into their own, when the frost is sprinkled on them, have only a few in our front garden but I love them, even more at this time of the year. have a few pennies to spend, might treat ourselves to a small Pinus, something suitable for seaside winds?

Thanks again girls and Steve!
Careful what you wish for Jane :0)
Sorry you're still suffering with the snow Sbg, must be getting a bit of a drag by now.
Dotty, plenty to choose from if you are serious about looking for a small pine :0)

great pics blue.. much better than looking at my dead garden lol :o))

Lol Blue.....why would I have to be careful......imagine waking up to a garden full of frosted conifers all resplendent in the winter sun, instead of shrivelled dried remains of summer and dog footprints in the snow!!...:o)

You know I love your garden - I run out of vocabulary to tell you I think it's fantastic - but I'm sticking with mine. ;-))

I couldn't start again now, could I?

Blue you posted a picture of a lovely low growing one some time ago, found it, Mugo Mops, added it to my favourites, so I wont forget it now.

I doubt any of you would really consider planting conifers, and why should you.
You all have what I think are beautiful individual gardens in their own right. I'm just content with publicizing and singing the praises of conifers to try and counteract the negativity over recent years. And if you all just see them in just a little more of a positive light than you did before...I'm satisfied :0)

Dotty - Pinus mugo 'Mops' is readily available, and I would think a good choice for your situation :0)

Were your ears burning this afternoon, Stephen? Louise and I were at a GC together (yes, they DID let us in!) and we were talking about your two gardens....I won't make you blush by telling you what we said - but it was all very complimentary! xx
