Castle Hill..West Yorkshire..

Last Sunday,we drove up to this local beauty spot, high above Huddersfield..and it has panoramic views all around for miles..A very historical place, with only The Victoria Tower remaing at present..There used to be a very nice pub here, but sadly fell into disrepair..but two local brothers got planning permission to rebuild in a similar style, using the existing local stone..
They then flouted the planning regulations, and after a lot of controversary, were made to knock it down…They have re applied,so it is a very contentious subject at the moment..but hopefully,it will materialise ,as there are no facilities at all up at the top..except for a booth run by the Country side Rangers,to let visitors access the Tower, for a small payment…As it has 138 steps to the top,we declined to climb them ! :o)
I have tried to take circular views all around our area, but sorry for the clarity,as it was quite hazy,in the distance..
I will start with a little of the History of Castle Hill..again,not very clear in some parts, owing to the position of the sun ,on the Information board..

Victoria Tower…

The present day Beacon..lit at important events,,and Russell wondering how he could put me up there ! Lol.

The downside..vandals have stolen some of the lovely stone flags round the tower…! :o(

Now to the views..starting with the town..The foreground is mainly comprised of our University, and reclaimed mills used to convert to accomodation for our many students..and the background is looking towards Halifax..

The Suburbs…

Looking towards the Pennines into Lancashire..

Towards Holmfirth,and South Yorkshire area,,ie,Sheffield..

Towards Wakefield, and the imposing Emley Moor transmitter ..
GoY member,Yorkshire, lives at this side of Castle Hill..:o)

We have completed the circular tour,so it was time to get the car rug, flask and biccies, and just lie back in the sun.looking at the beautiful sky..

.and the occasional pleasant distraction ..:o)

Hope you enjoyed another part of my hometown..

Great blog Bloomer, really interesting :-)
Mad how just the tower remains. I dont blame you for not taking on the steps, no need anyway with the views you got anyway.
I think you would light up the beacon if Russell put you in it:-)

Thank you,Neellan...it was a lovely day..and no way, would you get me on a Skateboard !..or try to fly that kite..it looked so heavy ! It pulled him off the board a couple of times...poser :o))

13 Aug, 2012

Lol that was my thought, skateboard and kite are not two items that naturally go together - either one left to me would be just an accident waiting to happen - still I'm sure he made you smile as you lay there comfortably enjoying your biccies :o)

That was interesting, and the views are fantastic.
Pitty about the vandalism. I don't understand the mentality of some people.

18 Aug, 2012

Thanks Hywel..Stone thefts are rife here ,as most of our walls are also of Yorkshire stone..tops of garden walls are a prime target too..always someone out to make a fast buck..so sad ...

18 Aug, 2012

Dare I say, you need to chill more, if only so we get more lovely pics :o))))))))))))))

18 Aug, 2012

I'm all for that,N3..it doesn'y take much persuasion to get me to chill...It's my favourite pastime :o)
