We have a wild area behind our fence, which doesn’t belong to us,but we were given access to it by the owners..The builders planted trees ,as it was to be a designated wildlife area..on a steep slope, with a stream at the bottom..so unsuitable for building…As you will see,it has matured nicely over the years, and a pleasure to look at…and we maintain some of it,to stop it encroaching through our fence, and planted a barrier of evergreen shrubs, dug up from our own garden..
To say I am annoyed,is a very mild statement..I am absolutely livid,as while we and two of our other neighbours were away at the weekend ,someone with no love of nature,or intelligence, took it upon them to cut down one of a pair of Silver Birch trees…and just dumped it down by the stream …Why? ..
I have my own suspicions about this moron, but no proof, sadly…but I will try to find out..as it isn’t the first time this has happened…and I know who did the same to an Alder tree that was there too..also done while we were away,a few years ago !
Would you believe that an engineer from a satellite company told another neighbour, that it was blocking his signal ???…instead of erecting his dish much higher up,this was his advice! ..All of us have the same TV system, and no one else has a problem…
I shall be doing a bit of detective work, and casually asking around…Miss Marple hat now on !
sorry to be so pessimistic this morning..but needed to express my feelings…I could quite willingly tie the person to the remaining stump and leave ‘him’ there ..forever ! ..
This is the sorry sight…

the browning remains of a lovely tree,by the stream…

I just hope the other one will be safe from the Butcher !

Oh B. what can I say? 'moron' is not a good enough word is it? Well on the positive side, you now have a log pile for all critters passing by and maybe now you could plant even more seedlings perhaps bury an acorn or two and scatter some wildflower seeds or something! I know you must be hopping mad, I would be totally. Good luck Ms. Marple, hope you are wearing your hat!!! x

what a horrible surprise for your return from holiday. sorry thats happened bloomer, its lovely to have that area there and such a shame that others dont appreciate it.

28 Jun, 2012

Oh dear Bloomer, that is not good. Can you not inform the land owners of your suspicions of who it is & of their tresspassing & criminal damage?

28 Jun, 2012

What a shame! Some people need chopping down. We have a beautiful nature reserve behind us (in SE London would you believe?!) I would be absolutely devastated if some moron came along and decided they didn't like a tree in a certain place.

This is so sad, Sandra.
I hope these people don't start making a habit of doing such things while you are away, because it will also spoil your outings, if, while you are out, you're wondering what might be going on around your home !

28 Jun, 2012

Maybe CCTV should be set up now!

28 Jun, 2012

I would certainly be livid! Just goes to show that there are morons everywhere.

Whilst on a course one of the other participants told me that a very mature tree in her garden was cut down by a neighbour, whilst she was away, so the leaves wouldn't go into his swimming pool. Legally he was in the wrong but what can she do. To take legal action would have been expensive and trespass is a civil action. Could she prove criminal damage or who actually did the cutting, were there any witnesses? In my experience the police would need to stand next to the tree whilst it was falling before they did anything and then it would be a crime number. The criminal wins again.
If it is proven about the signal and it is a national company then I would complain to them and still get no satisfaction. If we take action we are liable to be prosecuted, the victims loose.
That's why in America they all carry guns (generalisation) , it deters a lot of crime.

28 Jun, 2012

Actually by being allowed to carry guns, it increases crime.

Some people just don't deserve to share the same planet as the rest of us. :-(

Glad you all agree,guys..the land belongs to our local Bowling club.,some of which was sold off to build our Bungalows....and very strange that one of the 'know all 'committee....has had run ins with us all before about this area....they were supposed to maintain it....just another thought I had about who could have been involved as well..but,only a thought at this stage,as I can't accuse anyone, without proof, and wouldn't..
.....Sadly,no easy way to go about this, and the garage/co-op adjacent to this land,do have CCTV..but it wouldn't have captured anything ,because of the angle, and other trees..We will just have to resign ourselves that it's gone.,and hope it doesn't happen again..
Anyone remember the "Black Panther" blog ? Lol..wish it was still there..that would have been enough to scare anyone off ! :o)))

Oh Bloomer so sorry - a tree is a friend - and for it to have been cut down for no apparent reason is a very sad state of affairs - I wish you luck in finding out which horrid person cut the tree down - Marigold

Bloomer I feel as angry as you. We have a spare piece of land belonging to the council at the back of our garden, they cut the grass and leave a border of about 6ft for the wild life. There was a large elderbery tree at the back of our wall which someone cut down - just wish I knew why.

28 Jun, 2012

Thanks,Marigold..We have watched them grow from young saplings,so yes, they are like friends..so sad to think people would do such a thing..or even consider it..I might be wrong, but I thought these were protected..and you weren't allowed to cut one down..but scum like this person wouldn't know it..or much of anything, come to that..:o(

Oh Dear Sandra what an awful homecoming for you, I would feel exactly as you do, very very angry and sad too, hope you find out who the selfish moron is, like you say though nothing you can do now its gone apart from give them a piece of your mind, it is a pity though tying to the remaining tree and whipping comes to mind!!

28 Jun, 2012

It wasn't nice to see,Carole....We don't go out there often, and I only noticed when I went out to throw some seed heads from the Welsh poppies, yesterday,as I don't put them in the compost bin..and the last time he went out,was with some grass cuttings ,before we went away..He would have noticed straight away,as it's opposite the gate..Someone knew a few of us wouldn't be around !

28 Jun, 2012

Such a shame, technology seems more important than nature sometimes......but then again where would WE be without it.....Sounds sneaky to do it while you were away, best of look with the investigation Bloomer X

Our electricity is on overhead lines that run along the brook in the valley, eon have to trim the branches periodically or we lose power but thankfully thats all they do, and its a planned operation with all of us informed, your situation is disgraceful.

28 Jun, 2012

Aw bloomer so sorry that has happened! go get them!

28 Jun, 2012

I'm not surprised you are angry Bloomer I would be aslo, some very sick rotten folk about,

28 Jun, 2012

B. could you put a note through various doors, saying that you are investigating the matter?

28 Jun, 2012

Each to his own, but I think there should be another planet for nurds who want nothing in their sad lives but gadgets :o(
I do hope he's caught and made to replace the tree, ... and that hopefully he might one day come to realise other people count as much as him and his gadgets.
(I think he's an idiot and needs to be taught a lesson !)

28 Jun, 2012

I'm so sorry Bloomer . . . what an appalling act of vandalism. As you say, why???!! I absolutely hate this type of behaviour - completely pointless and deeply upsetting for you and your nature-loving neighbours. Lots of luck with finding the culprit.

28 Jun, 2012

Thanks for all your comments..I feel a bit calmer now..no need to go like a bull at a gate..that just won't alter ,or help the situation..but that's how I felt at the time...I am just going to bide my time..and see what results from having a casual chat with other neighbours, who may have heard or seen anything...funnily enough I have seen neither of the two I have my suspicions about, since coming back ..very unusual, but of course it could be purely coincidental..we will see ..I will let you know if anything materialises....but thanks for caring :o)) xx

28 Jun, 2012

My Council have been planting roadside trees along residential roads (don't know where the money came from mind!) and some idiots have been snapping them off at knee height. Bring back the village stocks I say! :-(

29 Jun, 2012

So mindless, aren't they,Muddy ? I think a Guillotine would be more appropriate..let the punishment fit the crime !

30 Jun, 2012

Gosh Bloomer, I`d be spitting feathers and how sneaky and spineless to wait until you were away, as you say its difficult to prove though...

30 Jun, 2012

So was I,Sue..and worse !..patience might bring some results though..through the grapevine at the Bowling club..some find it impossible to keep their mouths shut !
and I'm sure a bragger will be bound to let everyone know how he got away with it ! ..watch this space .:o)..
