Last November,I posted a blog and pics of the Gardens and the exterior of this lovely National Trust property in North Yorkshire..I have finally got round to part two,so hope you enjoy a walk around inside..We were lucky in that photography is now allowed, without a flash.so as not to harm any of the delicate furnishings and paintings..
This is the grand entrance hall, with a beautiful fireplace..the start of the tour…As previously,I took pics of
the information relating to various rooms..it makes it so much easier, and less time consuming..

First visit was upstairs..

Now downstairs, and the dining room..The guide in this room had amazing knowledge, and you could feel his love for this place..The first thing that struck us,was the plastered ceiling, with it’s design .He went into a lot of detail, explaining that the lime was usually mixed with urine,so was collected in large buckets, and taken to the room for mixing…When they ran out, they were given buckets of ale,to be used as an alternative..and also for drinking..children as well..the problem being, when they got to the far end of the ceiling, the design wasn’t as perfect as it should have been, having drunk more than they should ! You will see what I mean,if you look closely,at the circles on the right….we would never have noticed,if not told about it..:o)

..this must have been an alcohol free day ! :o)

Into the huge kitchen…..

This drinking pot is made of leather..and measures are marked at intervals on the outside, then called pegs.If the drinker didn’t want a full measure, they would ask for it to be taken down,to a lower one, hence the expression"to take down a peg or two "…

Back outside now,and a look at the building at the other side of the hall..

Where next ? To the cafe of course, and gift shop/information building..after 2 hours spent here,we were ready for refreshment :o)

My trade mark scone and coffee, wherever I go..you’ve just got to do it !

Sorry it is such a long blog, but it was so interesting,I got carried away a bit..We will definitely go again ,sometime. One of the nicest Halls we have visited…I still have lots of pics of the old stables, which house old farm machinery, but think it would have been a bit too much ..so won’t bore you with anymore…:o)

Is this the one in Keighley Sandra ? I think it must be , we were invited to a 60th birthday party there about 5 years ago in the hall , it was fabulous , what a shame we weren't able to see the rest of the building and now I know what we missed , thanks for showing us If we go up again we shall delegate more time to see it .....

Thanks Annella, glad you don't find them boring..Everyone hasn't got the same taste, but most seem to find them interesting..:o_

Thank you Amy,it is the same place..how lovely to be invited there..we had never been before ,but it started off as a lousy day,so decided to have a run out there..From the main road,it didn't look much, but it is actually the back of the Hall, but go round the other side,to the entrance, and see the gardens and views is stunning..you must go,if you are up that way again..did you see part 1 at all? posted last November...

Thanks,Cinders..I think it tells it much better than I ever could..and I don't have try to remember either..or type it all..pleased you enjoyed it.:o)

Cheers G.mage..I loved that window too,so had to take another pic, from the inside..just wonderful.and those ceilings too..I think those were my favourites...
Agree about the scone..just like blotting paper really, only tastes better ! ( I should imagine ) Lol.

Thank you Terra,These are my favourite kind of days out, plus attached gardens of course.:o)

It was a great blog Bloomer - I love visiting places really do - used to go with the schools to these places - but could never look at what you wanted to look at then - stupid school bah! Love walking round and the smell of older places - but wouldn't want to be on my own at night!!!

I too enjoy visiting our grand houses and gardens, luckily my daughter does as well.
Your blogs are always a good read and the fact that I`m so far away makes me appreciate them even more Bloomer, I like to look them up on the web when one appears on here...

Thanks Paul..I don't think you appreciate these places till you are a bit older ,especially not at school.I would have chosen somewhere like Blackpool, when I was at at school ! Lol.....and Sheilar, thanks for the nice compliment..:o)

Nice of you to look at part 1,Amy..it gives you an all round view of the place, and how lovely it is..thanks.:o)

Maybe you will get there one day,Lincslass, but It would be a long way for you to travel..thank you for your lovely comment..:o)
Thank you,Bilbo..it wasn't at all spooky, quite light and spacious..maybe at night would feel different. We had a guide in every room,so we weren't alone..think that was as much for security as well as the info...

A plasterer told me once that those ceilings are made in squares on the floor. When dry are lifted up and fixed onto the ceiling. Thats how they did it.

That's interesting,Diane..but logical.I have often wondered how it was done...

Not boring at all! Bring on the next bit! I always wonder - when I see such incredibly old furnishings - what future generations will make of todays' furnishings? Will they exclaim "Oh, Goodness! Look at all the light they allowed inside!" "Why the use of such pale colours?" "It must have been hot in those days - no carpets on the floors!" I'd LOVE to be a fly on the wall!

Thank you,Nariz..I loved the old barns, with the coaches, carts and tools they used, which we visited before we left..but not to everyone's taste,so haven't shown those..I agree about reactions to our furnishings,in the future too..much the same as ours,I guess..:o)..We do still have carpets in the main areas,,so maybe they will think we were trendsetters !Lol...I wonder what they would think of old Video tapes.,which are already obselete ..now everything is digital? ..and we still have some, which we can still look at,via a combined tv/video portable one.in a bedroom.!..the TV can't be watched of course, but we can play back the videos..mainly of family events ..I remember a friend lending us a huge, heavy video camera, for our Silver wedding, and our first cruise in Europe..It only filmed in black and white ,and my poor OH ,had to lug it everywhere..not an easy task ,on the top of Vesuvious, and crowded streets of Florence and Rome ! ha ha,those were the days !

Yes - we have a cupboard full of 'modern technology' that is no longer modern! In fact I'm still carting a camera around with me everywhere (although it IS digital) AND a mobile phone - because I have one of those wonderful mobile inventions that actually makes and received phone calls! It isn't also a camera and computer and playstation and makes the tea. Sometimes I think technology goes too far in 'over-simplifying' things to the point where nothing is simple any more. Having said that - I know 'one item for all purposes' is a boon to many people. Horses for courses. ;o)

My mobile is like that,Nariz..an old 'pay as you go'...lucky if it gets £10 a year put on it,as I hardly ever use it..My daughter and partner tried to get me in 'up to date' mode, and bought me a new one with camera etc..for my 70th birthday.and ashamed to say it is still in it's box ! The buttons are so small, and my eyesight isn't good..so I find it difficult to use,but I have tried...I prefer my digital camera too..at least we have got something modern! :o)

Another great blog Sandra does look a lovely old place, maybe a trip in the springtime, love all those wonderful Four Posters , they look so big and comfy [wonder if they really are] The window is beautiful and would love to explore the inviting kitchen, can just imagine Cook sitting down at the table for a cuppa after cooking the family meal;0) Pleased the scones and coffee met with your approval, have you ever thought of doing a comsumer review on all the scones you have tasted on your visits you could use a Bloomer Star Rating system, wouldnt mind joining you if you take the idea up lol

27 Jan, 2012

Lol,Carole..you are on ! and they would all get a 'Michelin star',so far..but someday,I might get a dodgy one..just have to keep on trying, won't I ? Thanks for your nice comment..we will have to make arrangements to have a full day out,in the better weather...something to look forward to.:o)
