Another Yorkshire walk...

We were lucky enough to have yet another hot day..in mid September..one a month seemed to be a pattern..so off we went to the other side of our Colne valley..This time,we went in the car and parked up..off we go ..I apologise if some pics aren’t too clear, but there was a heat haze..honest!and I also had to zoom in a lot.
This part of the walk is very flat, and called Longwood edge..the village of Longwood lies below..and looks across to the highest point, called Scapegoat hill..I should have looked it up,as I don’t know the origin of the name..but it is a lovely walk from there as well, and done it many times (only downhill,as there is a bus route ! )
We can access the M62 from where we are now,and from Scapegoat Hill, which shows why it is the highest motorway in the country…just to give you an idea of our geographical position..

The village of Longwood, down in the valley..which used to be a busy textile area..all now gone,so mainly residential

you will notice that almost every property here is built of Yorkshire stone..we have a huge quarry at our side, which is still producing..

looking across to the village of Golcar..where our grandson lives,to the right of the church..the hills on the horizon, are part of the Pennines..

Walking on a bit further…and a nice breeze up here..

These three came to check us out.:o)

Another view across..this is the area where we live..just to the left of the fields..couldn’t see our house from here..blocked by trees..

At this point,we were at the end of the flat walk,so I suggested we turn down to the village of Longwood, and walk on the main road back…we saw this hidden among the woodland, and on closer inspection ,there was an old overgrown graveyard here..sad that it looks uncared for..

First sign of Autumn..

Now for the hard part..I had forgotten about the very steep climb back up to where the car was parked.! and it was scorching hot by now..and no shade..Russell did warn me,but of course,I had said ‘It will be fine "The breeze high up,did not appear to be down here..What a climb…there was only one thing to do,when we got back to the car..call in at the Cricket club, near our Grandson’s home, and relax with a cooling drink, and watch a bit of the match..soon after,Thomas and his Daddy came too,so
that was nice…:o)

Don’t think he knows it isn’t a football pitch! Lol.

It was a nice day out..but will take notice of OH next time…maybe ! :o))

Magnificent ! Such wonderful scenery - rolling hills, and flat places - my favourite sort of topography :o) It's nice to live where you're surrounded with beauty.

Thanks Grandmage..welcome to the comfy club! Lol.
Our daughter and family live just behind the first row of houses by the cricket club..and her partner and his family are all keen cricket fans..two of the brothers are on the committee, one is a player..and his parents have just bought a cottage overlooking the green..how good is that..?..Russell has been doing some painting for them recently,on the Bowling club building, just behind the clubhouse..nice place to go,and family orientated ..and the drinks are very cheap! :o))
Thanks Pixi..it is sad,I agree..we wouldn't have noticed it,if I hadn't been having a breather walking up that steep hill !..just looked over the wall, and spotted it..
Thank you Terra, pleased you enjoyed it..think I have shown most of our area now..but I'm sure I will be visiting other areas ,at some point.:o)
Thank you,Hywel..the hills are lovely..as long as you are walking down them! :o)

Lovely pictures and scenery Sandra, we are lucky with the backdrop of the pennine Hilis, sorry I missed that lovely scorching day it must have passed us by lol Nice to see the pictures of the Cricket Club a nice English country scene, you shoul have taken a closeup we could have admired Russells painting! Thomas will be very familar with the Cricket pitch by the time he is old enough to play ;0)

There's just something special about Yorkshire isn't there - nowhere else has exactly that atmosphere (well, perhaps the parts of Lancashire nearest to it...)

thanks San..so many nice walks here..and Thomas is
coming on so well..He said'grandma' properly tonight ,when they came for tea..I have been a 'Gandad' up to
now..:o))
Oh,you should,Shirley..I know its a long way for you..but there are some good bases to stay in the Dales..especially cottages, which I know you enjoy..and B&B's..pleased you both enjoyed this..:o).Sent you a PM this afternoon...
Thank you,Carole..You would have loved Russell's painting..Masonry paint at it's best ! Trying to cover up the Graffiti.on the walls..now,was there a hint of Burnt sienna, yellow ochre ?? mmm, nore a bog standard beige ! Lol.Thomas is already very familiar with the cricket club..they had their buffet here at his naming ceremony in april..with a bouncy castle on the pitch..and knows just where the freezer is,with mini milk lollies ! :o)
I think you are right Steragram..that is how I feel, but then again it is home..:o).I think the same about Wales..it also has 'that feeling' for us too..something special, you just can't put your finger on...

Thank you,Carol..it was nice to see some sunshine ! :o)

11 Nov, 2011

You're right Sandra, Wales does have its own atmosphere, but a complete contrast to Yorkshire. Well, we can't have everything all the time.
