I don’t know if any of you watch the new series of ‘Hairy Bikers’..but the theme is highlighting the Meals on Wheels service, which is sadly,in decline for lack of Volunteers..
and next week,it is from the village of Slaithwaite, where I was born..a couple of miles away from where we live now..some of you may remember I posted a blog and pics,of this lovely place, last September, titled
‘Our beautiful Colne Valley ’.
We were there on Sunday,as they were holding a Food Festival, with a produce swap of locally grown fruit and veg,and even if you didn’t have anything to give, you could make a small donation,or give seeds instead. It is only a small venture yet,but it was very well attended..
Lots of home baking ,by the W.Institute, and the Meals on Wheels team..
The mill in the background, was the biggest employer in the Textile Industry,at one time.A lot of my family worked there, including my mum..sadly now stood empty..

I am so excited at seeing next weeks programme, and all the familiar places I know so well…

What a shame that a good sturdy building should stand empty! I look forward to seeing the programme bloomer. A few weeks back I watched the programme on Tidewell - the village that applied for lottery funding to revitalise their village. I havent seen the finish tho. They could do so much with the building if Slaithwaite had lottery funding.
Do tell what channel and time/date.

i shall be watching ~ just watched tonights episode ~ the bikers are doing a great job.

Nice comments girls..thanks..The village has had lots of money from the Lottery and Heritage funds,as it helped to reopen their part of the Huddersfield narrow canal,in 2001,which was filled in,in the early 50's..the only canal which goes through the centre of a village..and now enables narrow boats to travel the length of it..They have lots of tourists there,as the filming of 'Where the Heart is' took place there, and surrounding area..I don't know if anything is planned for the mill, maybe it is now listed, but a couple of smaller ones,on the canal side, have been converted now..one is Slaithwaites own Bakery,,with a coffee shop(very nice) and the other,a little local brewery.

Tet,it will be on at 9pm,next Tuesday..for an hour..on BBC2.
and although the name 'Slaithwaite'is pronounced like the spelling, only strangers say it that way..to many it is prounced 'Slathwaite' and to us yokels,it is'Slawit'..to rhyme with cow !! and no ,don't even go there..:o))

I have been watching it and love the Hairy Bikers. Will watch it next week and think of you Bloomer ;o))

Hi Sandra thats very interesting , I will watch it as it is a lovely little place and it will give some of the history. Although Im not very keen on the Hairy Bikers, but will put up with them as it is a local beauty spot!!

21 Sep, 2011

i only like some of their programs PP but this one has a different slant ~ i wouldnt mind helping to do the cooking.

21 Sep, 2011

Its just their scruffy appearance I dont like, I prefer cooks to be presentable, so would be good if you give them a hand lol The programme sounds interesting and hopefully will attract more volunteers for Meals on Wheels and also show the beautiful historic area on our doorstep ;0)

21 Sep, 2011

i agree ~ wish they would have their hair cut!!

21 Sep, 2011

ive been watching this as well....how nice for it to be in your home town...

21 Sep, 2011

I'd forgotten you were born in "Slowit"..........I like the bairy hikers....lol

22 Sep, 2011

That made me smile,Annella..I take it you meant you would think of me,in reference to the village, and not the Hairy Bikers ? Lol.,,just had my hair cut, unlike them!! :o))

I'm sure you wil appreciate the scenery,Carole..:o))

Shame I didn't mention it when they were filming,Sticki..I would have put your name down .:o),although I wish I had gone to watch,as they were there a few weeks..

glad you enjoy it,Holly..so do I,especially this theme..so worthwhile..
Oh dear,Lou..hope it is only a short term memory loss..Lol.
Those Barbary Apes didn't get to you,did they ? :o))

22 Sep, 2011

No fear of that...I stayed in the bus.......they stayed outside......

22 Sep, 2011

Sensible girl,Lou..a bit daunting, arent they? Probably multiplied a 1000 fold since we were there..in the 80's..:o)

22 Sep, 2011

Nice you could go there on that day Sandra. It sounds a good thing.
And you live in a very historic area. Pitty the mill is empty. I hope they find a use for it.

22 Sep, 2011

It was a lovely day,Hywel, and glad we went.. I hope they will do something good with the mill too..a Textile museum would be great,as they have one in Bradford, which is a brilliant place to visit. ..That would be good for the village..I just hope that the 'money talks' projects..doesn't have it turned into flats and Apartments..a few mills round here have been..but on the other hand,it is giving someone a home,..at a very high rent,of course!

22 Sep, 2011

that happened to an old mill I know..sad..

22 Sep, 2011

It is,Pixi..part of our heritage just going down the pan..we have so many empty mills here,so I suppose it's better than knocking them down to erect an ugly monstrosity in its place..with no character at all....but a lot of people just can't afford the rents they charge,so a lot of them stay empty anyway....

22 Sep, 2011

Yeah...I wouls make it a big art centre! if I win the lottery tomoorwo I'll buy it lol ;)

22 Sep, 2011

If you win the lottery Pixi, you're bringing me over there for a visit!!!! We have a deal! Bought my tickets today.

22 Sep, 2011

Hhahah oh aye! :) im gonna buy a castle first!!!!

22 Sep, 2011

Right then,Pixi, see you around the village then! :o)))

22 Sep, 2011

Phlat!!!

22 Sep, 2011

;)

22 Sep, 2011

Very sad to see that building stood empty, Sandra ... surely there is a use for it in the community somehow? ... I'm not a fan of the Hairy Bikers but I'll watch the programme for the history ... lol!

23 Sep, 2011

They may do something with it,at some point,Shirley..it could be down to cost,as it is a huge mill..and will take a lot of restoration, and bringing up to current standards,I imagine..hope you enjoy the programme,in spite of the H.Bikers..:o)

I have been watching the prog as it is on after my favourite Great British Bake Off...sadly missed:-( but so glad Jo won:-) I wouldn't mind volunteering for meals on wheels (not eating them) I think it a great shame that people are being fed plastic rubbish, they'd be bettter off with beans on toast! I do remember your previous blog Bloomer, I think I was jealous of where you grew up...so lovely. I think the Hairy Bikers seem lovely, but I've never watched them before:-)

glad you enjoyed it,Ba,It's nice to see our own village,on TV....The other village of Marsden, next one to Slaithwaite, also featured last night,is where my OH was born..and where we take Thomas to feed the ducks..I do hope they managed to get lots of volunteers there too..I'm sure they did,as that is also a close community..One of my sisters in law has always lived there, and the other one has her hairdressing salon in the village too...

6 Oct, 2011

My eyes have changed from blue to green...too late to move now though:-)

6 Oct, 2011

Green eyes are very nice,Ba..:o))
