After watching Carol Klein on Friday,I thought it about time I made a start,so off we went to a favourite garden centre.First stop, the pub next door to it..how convenient..and had a lovely sunday lunch..and then it was down to business..the first welcome thing I saw,was 10% off everything..great.!
So,here’s what I bought..:o), a bag of seed compost, bag of Vermiculite,Rose food, more bird seed, and some bulbs,in packets. 2 Anemone Japonica, one white and one pink, for some late summer colour in my long border, where they have plenty of room to grow and spread, and a Zantedeschia"Picasso",which is a two tone cream and pink,or purple, looking at the picture. This,I have since realised, when I got home,is not a hardy one,and it looks like I will have to lift and store it,before the frosts. It is my own fault for not reading the info correctly, before buying…Anyway,it was a lovely day,and on top of the 10% off,I used a garden voucher I was given,so the grand total cost me £ 2.06p:o))..Now that’s what I call a good shopping day…I am raring to go now,and when Russell brings my heated propagator down from the loft..
I can get started on sowing some seeds…Thanks Carol.!

I enjoy Carol Kleins programme too, but how on earth can she do all that gardening with that bloody scarf always dangling in her way??? It cracks me up!!

glad you got your priorities right sandra lol as in PUB haha and seems you got some good bargains to to start off 2011, i need to get motivated to :o)

I don't need motivation to get me going. I have been itching to get started, so as soon as could get out there, I got gardening like crazy. It is just a shame, that I can't do much with it at the moment, especially just after going crazy at the Garden Centre.

Might have to.... whoops, did I just accidentally pull up that plant and now need to replace it with a lot more.

LOL

That made me laugh Donna,I couldn't garden with that either..it takes me all my time to even wear gloves..Lol

Lol San,although I don't drink,Russ likes a pint ,..I only go for the food...mmm,and a Tonic and lemon...Boring aren't I ?.Just nice to get out,as it wasn't too bad today..just the odd shower, and the gales we had yesterday have gone.

Steady on,Alex, you are going to have nothing left in your garden,if you keep pulling plants up..Lol..but its nice to have the enthusiasm for gardening,a lovely addiction..:o)

lol sandra your like me i dont bother to drink but baz likes a pint if we go out and i drive back, like you say its so nice just to get out and do something ;o)

made me laugh too donna
what a lovely day bloomer, lunch out is always good and i like the sound of those plants ~ especially anemone japonica.

16 Jan, 2011

Good day for you Bloomer, garden vouchers are great in my opinion and a discount day as well, smiled to see bird seed amongst your buys, hope our feathered friends appreciate how we look out for them. Has Russell been up that loft yet, ?.....

16 Jan, 2011

Lovely day out by the sound of it, Bloomer! Great buys too. My friends are so tired of buying me Garden vouchers, but for me, it couldn't be a more helpful gift.....! Not too many ice cubes in that tonic and lemon , mind!!! LOL! \0/x

16 Jan, 2011

You lucky girl getting vouchers and that Anemone sounds lovely. The scraf might be to hide the wrinkles lol as they are getting so idiotic and ageist like the rest of the businesses here and on tv nowadays.

Thanks for your nice comments..I missed something out,as I also got a large bottle of Organic tomato food in with that too, :o),although I am not growing any this year, but it is suitable for other plants too.In fact,I have decided only to grow new potato's and salad stuff this year. Now we are both retired,we will probably have a few more short breaks away, and I have no one to look after Tomato's,and runner beans etc,as it is too much to expect from my lovely neighbours now, they have enough to cope with,....and Flori..I have my tonic and lemon ,neat,..no ice!..what a little devil,eh? ..Lol.

17 Jan, 2011

are you growing the potatoes in the vegetable plot or do you put them in a tub? i dont really have the room in my flower beds but i love potatoes and wondered about growing them in a tub or a large pot

17 Jan, 2011

Good news Sandra :o) I'm pleased for you.
Donnaj said about Carol's scarf lol - it reminded me of a comment I made somewhere about her sleves :O

Isn't it nice when you have vouchers to spend you can buy without such a big bill at the end ...We met friends for lunch yesterday it lasted all afternoon , it was dark when we finished ...LOL.. no time left for the garden centre . I'm glad you had a nice time Sandra :o)

17 Jan, 2011

Brilliant bargain, keep thinking i'll get in my garden but then think i'll wait till it gets a bit warmer, can't stand cold weather.

17 Jan, 2011

Sticki..I have used all my available borders in the garden now,for potato's,as mine is only small, and I can't re use the previous places yet,but I also did some every year in pots as well. I even took some plants out of one border last year,so I could grow some...When I finished harvesting them,I then planted my Delphiniums, there, which were in pots, and moved some Lychnis there too...A lot of juggling about, but worth it.I am doing them all in pots this time, and I have room down the side of the house,on a long path, which we don't use much,so not in the way.I will probably have about 9 large pots, but 3 will stand in the open cold frame,as that is out of our way too.I only plant one potato to a pot.You don't get as big a yield as in the garden, but the taste of your own is amazing, and far superior to bought ones....I still enjoy growing them, the amount is immaterial to me,as we don't eat that many, and I give some to our daughter and partner..

Lol,Hywel,I DID think of your comment, when Donna mentioned the scarf, she does look tethered with all that lot..no way could I wear that scarf..
Sixpence, you could well be right about it hiding the wrinkles..if you ever see a pic of me with one on,that could be the reason..oops,I just remembered,I wore one on the beach on Christmas day on the beach in Spain..but only because it was chilly..honest..!:o)

Glad you had a nice day out too Amy,time doesn't matter does it,when you are retired..its great..I wish my family would listen,as I always say garden vouchers,if they ask what I would like, they just ignore me..Lol.I even asked for compost one year,..they stared at me in disbelief...and so far, nothing garden related at all for ages..!None of them are gardeners,by the way..can you tell ??

Clarice,I am not going in the garden yet either..too cold..I have been in the shed, and brought all I need for seed sowing, into the Conservatory....till I am ready to do it..Luckily the floor is washable..I am a mucky gardener Lol.

does it matter where i put the potato pots ie do they need any sun?
i shall definitely have a go ~ when should i start them off?
have you ever grown kestrel potatoes? they are lovely to eat!

17 Jan, 2011

they do need some sun,Sticki, and lots of water, especially ,
in pots,as they soon dry out, although partial sun, would probably be ok.You can start chitting them any time,..I start mine off in a egg box,it holds them perfectly.I haven't tried Kestrel, and I don't know if they are first or second earlies or not, which is what I prefer to grow.I have had,Swift,Vales Emerald,Belle de fonteney,Nicola and Charlotte, over the years..as we prefer a waxy variety, and I find they don't go to mush when cooked, although I mostly steam mine, just in case. All these are quite blight resistant, and very clean,I have never had slug damage either..maybe just lucky...I have never bothered with big potato's for chipping or baking,as I haven't the space.Hope this helps..if you want to email me or send a PM,feel free,if you need more info.:o))

17 Jan, 2011

many thanks ~ have to wait till builders finished i think before i go visiting GC, blight resistant is important so i had better watch out for that
i like the floury white potatoes usually but dont mind either when they are new.

17 Jan, 2011

I had to laugh, theres a pub just across the road from the garden centre where I work and customers often drop in there for a spot of refreshment after visiting us. When done of your purchases, theres nothing like a garden voucher for a cheap days shopping! :o)

17 Jan, 2011

You are very welcome,Sticki..:o)

17 Jan, 2011

Lol,Sandra...they certainly plan for us punters very well, don't they? Good food, lovely plants to buy,and vouchers to spend..nothing could be better! :o)).They just know we will go again..

17 Jan, 2011

Can I come and live with you bloomer? :-)

18 Jan, 2011

Sure thing,Ba..now is it for the garden centre, the pub,my spuds ..or for my personality and friendship? Lol.any of these will do..:o))

18 Jan, 2011

All of them...and the short breaks, when are we off?:-)

18 Jan, 2011

ah,I forgot the short breaks..pack your bag in readiness Ba,..it might be short notice...depending on what's going cheap...not cheep,cheep,...Lol.

18 Jan, 2011

Bag packed, just awaiting the call :-))

18 Jan, 2011

Glad you got some good bargains B. as for the Zantedeschia”Picasso”, I would personally plant it in a pot, as I do mine, then pop them indoors for the winter, it works well and they always reward me with stunning flowers come summer. You could then put your pot amongst other plants in your border. By the way, I love Carol too, she is so natural, its a great prog.

19 Jan, 2011

Her husband looked happier this week too, I thought he looked a bit grumpy last week. probably trying to keep up with carol lol:-)

20 Jan, 2011

Thanks for that advice,Grandmage,I will do that.I had planned to put it in a pot,so that will be ok.Do I bring the whole pot inside for the winter,or take the bulb out,and dry it out ,and what kind of compost shall I use please?

I thiught that too,Ba,maybe he is a bit camera shy..unlike his wife..it was nice to see him having a speaking part..:o))

20 Jan, 2011

I use Multi, Bloomer and I leave them in the pot but keep it bone dry, then I re-pot with new compost the following spring.

20 Jan, 2011

Thanks Grandmage, that's a great help,..I will do that.I've never had one of these before,so it will be something nice to look forward to..:o)

20 Jan, 2011

Well you certainly had a very enjoyable and rewarding outing Sandrra [dont know how I missed this blog, hence the late comments] Sounds as if you got some bargains too, you are going to be very busy Carol Kliene has lots to answer for lol but bet the GC love her, good for buisness eh!
I went yesterday bought some packets of seeds, bulbs, Violas and a bargain pack of 4 Hellebores reduced from £10 to £4-50, the only thing is I couldnt wait to plant them as soon as I got home and didnt we have a hard frost!! same again tonight, oh dear maybe not such a bargain after all;0( Didnt go to the pub but enjoyed lunch in the garden centre] will email you tomorrow;0)

20 Jan, 2011

Thanks Carole, glad you found some bargains too..hope the Hellebores will be ok.did you go to Uppermill ?.it is even colder this morning, everything so white with the frost..so won't be going in the garden today, except to feed the birds..might have to go out for lunch again instead Lol.

21 Jan, 2011
