As it is -9 outside today,I thought you may appreciate some more warmth and sunshine,..I know I do !.This was our first visit to this island, and we loved it.Cagliari is on the south east coast, and is the capital. The best way to see it,is by approaching the city from the sea.Its massive castle, towers majestically overhead…and we climbed to the top,..eventually !!.Luckily, most of the streets from the Marina, old Harbour, and shopping area, meander leisurely upward, till we reached the base of the castle, and then it got a bit steeper. From then on,the streets were so narrow, that hardly any light reaches them, and only a sliver of blue sky reminds you that the light source is the intense sun of the Mediterranean…so it made the climb more bearable,as we had shade.I don’t think we would have attempted it otherwise..so,starting from the approach by sea,I will take you to the top..

Shall we take a hire car to the top..Lol…I think not.!!

Onwards and upwards now,to the Castle…

Here we are at last…are you out of breath yet.???

That is our ship in the background.

Sorry, but I lied..we are going even higher now,as we spotted this beautiful church, and it was so worth the extra climb,to see this lovely building, and the Architecture. There were no restrictions inside, for photography ,and hardly anyone there, only one or two who braved the walk..and us !

We went down to the crypt, and it was a bit daunting, but so glad we did…the stone carving, and tiling was amazing…

and at the end of the tour,I am taking a welcome breather…all downhill from here..and back to the ship for a late lunch..A wonerful day.hope you enjoyed it.

Thanks Paul,..glad you liked the car...too funny to ignore..wonder if they have M.O.T checks over there?.Lol.
Sorry about your grasses, but they will probably grow from the bottom again next year..hopefully....

Glad you liked it 6d.I felt better for doing it too...:o)

I think it is on a par with Sorrento for me, Cinders as it is so traditional, and we didn't know what to expect....lovely place...

Lol Shirley,I thought about a rest in the hammock as well, but as it was part of a Restaurant area, thought better of it.! Have a wonderful holiday, enjoy, and you might find a Hammock in Malta to relax on..in the sun :o)))

Thanks Sticki,it was beautiful, and so unexpected to find around the next corner. We have the same lovely blue sky here today, without the heat .Lol

Glad it made you feel better Lou, it was much smaller than some we have seen, but the interior is more stunning than some of them...Its the same ship, same cruise,as Parts I and 2.Thomson's Dream..

went down south on thursday to swindon to see the kids and grandkids, got past Birmingham and just could not believe it when we saw lovely green fields, they barely had any snow at all, frost but we can put up with that, had a wonderful time, roads are clear over this side of our hill but mountains of snow everywhere still, hope you are o.k.

Lovely blog bloomer. I can feel the sunshine.......:)) Only a couple of weeks now to the shortest day.....can't come soon enough! Still trudging through snow and slush here...a little more overnight but the roads are mostly passable. As long as we get away to Tenerife in Jan. I will be happy enough......and as long as it doesn't snow in Tenerife when we get there!

6 Dec, 2010

Karen, our son and his wife are finally flying home this evening! They have to leave Tenerife for Lanzarote to pick up more passengers, then everyone goes to Luton, regardless of their final destination! Not much fun if you need to get to Manchester for example. Still, they had a lovely extended holiday and made some new friends too. Snow in Tenerife? That would be headline news, it's not going to happen! : o )))

6 Dec, 2010

Oh no, not a pleasant journey home. They'll be fed up when they get back...better get the kettle on and make a cake!! :))

6 Dec, 2010

Sandra that church is absoloutely breathtaking well worth the hard climb upwards to reach it, I love these beautiful old cities with steep narrow street can imagine they are mostly unchanged from the day they were built;0)

Thanks Joanella,If you visit Naples ,all the cars seem to be like that..Lol.its an event if you see one without a dent.Lol.

Glad you had a good time, Yorkshire..and as you say,our main roads are clear at least.Looks like the white stuff could be here for a while..Its going to take some shifting...

Know the feelng,Karen..we are hoping for sunshine and warmth, when we go to Spain for Christmas..and just hoping this cold freezing stuff will have gone by then..Don't care if its pouring down, anything but this..

Shirley,At least you know what's happening, regards your son getting home..I got your PM,thanks.Have a great time, speak to you when you get back..:o))

Thanks Carole,it is beautiful,I agree, and its great that nothing seems to change..no high rise,or concrete monstrosities there...

Did you see any more of Sardinia? Sorry to keep saying 'been there' again, but as you know, we've spent a LOT of holidays in Italy over the years. We stayed in Alghero and took a funny little train to Sassari on our first visit.

The second time we stayed on the south coast and drove to Cagliari in a REAL hire-car - picked up at the airport!

Did you know that the Aga Khan created a very posh home at Costa Smeralda? It's a bit like Portofino - all Gucci and Valentino.

See - I'm getting all nostalgic again - and whose fault is it? ;-))

6 Dec, 2010

I don't blame you for wanting to back again,..ooh er,very posh ,having a decent hire car..we only had shank's pony..!
We did go to another part another day,..to Olbia..this was a change to our itinerary,as we were unable to do one port of call, but as we had never been to Sardinia before,we were pleased. We liked Olbia too,as so different from Cagliari.I had read on the ships daily newspaper, about the Aga Khan ,and Costa Esmeralda.Very upmarket,as you say.Sorry I am making you long for the good life again,Spritz..I did see all the 'posh shops'..but we found one, which was very busy, similar to an M&S,bought a nice outfit for Thomas...we queued for ages..I bet the other shops weren't happy about it opening there.People were buying things in huge amounts, mainly semed to be getting school clothes..Overall,we didn't find it too bad, pricewise, and we weren't ripped off for Cappucino's either..:o))

The thing I remember most about Sardinia is the emerald colour of the sea - I've never seen such a beautiful colour!

Then we saw the Nuraghi - did you get to see any? They're all over the island - tall structures made of piles of stones, dating from way back. Not a lot is known about their origin.

We were there when the children were actually at school - the little ones went in sort of tunic affairs - a bit like smocks! Being a teacher, I was nosey about their schools - the children have to buy all their own exercise books. (!)

7 Dec, 2010

I would like to spend a holiday there,Spritz,as we didn't have time to see anymore of the Island, thanks for telling me some more about it..one day maybe...:o))

8 Dec, 2010

I know you'd love it. We certainly did. In the north part of the Island, they speak Castilian, as well as Italian, and in the mountains to the south they have their own dialect. We went on a planned trip to have a meal of roast suckling pig etc in the open air, and the local men sang in the dialect - it was very special and a day out to remember for ever. :-)

I wonder if Olbia is where lavatera olbia comes from? I love this blog, what a beautiful place, the buildings and their decoration are so fantastic. I was wondering who the young woman was in the last photo? Italy looks such a wonderful country:-)

8 Dec, 2010
