These pictures revolve around two troughs both planted about 18 months ago.

This is Allium Sikkimensis a small but attractive flower

This is a current photo of the dwarf Hosta Trough several are now in flower.

The main growth in the middle is the Irish Tatting Fern which threatens to out grow the Hostas

Another angle.

Three small Hostas in pots in turn set down in a larger pot filled with sand.
One is H.Little White Lines another is Lemon Delight. the third I would need to look at the label

Close up here of Allium Narcissiflorum showing seed pod already forming within the flower

The so called Tufa ones are a lightweight cement mix Which I imagine would last many years The Troughs in the picture are made from Heavy Duty Polystyrene meat boxes, pretty easy to do and course if they need moving it is possible.
Others on Goy use fish boxes, the ones I have seen are generally thinner sides to them so would need a bit more care in handling.
I do have stone and cement ones but with each passing year they become more of a problem to handle, not sure why I keep wanting to move them.lol

You have some lovely unusual alliums Brian and the tiny Hostas are very attractive. Having the plants in troughs is a good way to display them and see them individually.

The member whose name I cant remember put detailed pictures on the site showing exactly how he made the
Tufa troughs. Much better than plastic !

If you look on the Scottish Rock garden site there is an article on construction of hypertufa troughs (to give it its proper name)
If you use Polystyrene depends how well it is made there are some on sale in the garden Ctrs that unless you pick them up you would not know they are not stone. That good.
