Salvias(never to late)

About six weeks ago I was talking to Val in her garden and she pointed out a nice blue Salvia asking did i think it would go through the winter outside,it being on the large size to move inside,Salvias being what they are Mediterranean plants it’s anybody’s guess.I said that i would have taken cuttings in early September and left it to take its chance with the winter, any way I took a couple of shoots and told here I would put them in some Vermiculite even though it was very late in the year.
I also had a similar conversation with Lulu and her plant which again was a handful(the plant not Lulu).
I believe she has lifted hers and replanted it.
This is the result of one cutting the other is rooting but needs another warm week before potting.
Now had this been 2010 it would not have worked
moral of story you never know unless you try.no heat has been used.

Actually Brian, you and Val inspired me...I pulled a bit of Hadspen Purple lobelia by accident while cutting it down. It did, I must admit have a thread of root but cut it and put 3 in a pot together. It has now grown new basal leaves whether from all 3 or just one I dont really know, cos the cuttings are around the edge and the new growth slap bang in the middle!!

Brilliant Brian. I have a lovely blue Salvia Patens that made it through last winter no problem (we got down to -10c here...not as bad as some more southerly inland parts). I have several cuttings in the greenhouse, in JI and grit, but I see you use vermiculite...and it obviously works really well...I will try that next time!

I use nearly all vermiculite, I think because it's sterile I have much less Botrytis and less cuttings damp off.As another little extra i put a layer of broken pieces of polystyrene below the Vermiculite originally I did it for drainage but soon found the new roots make straight for it,not sure why but given the chance the roots bore right in to it,could be warmth but think there is more to it.

Some Salvia (S.gaurantica "Black and Blue" is a good example) grow from tubers which can be treated as you would Dahlias.
