Some great plants there bjs, I want those lillie's. are they easy to find, do ordinary GCs sell them? Helvetika Pygmea is a beauty, shame i dont have a pond! Loving the allium too. your Helinium are gorgeous, like a breath of fresh air, on my wishlist for next year :))) I love trying out new plants..

All beautiful pics Brian, I agree with Sticki the Lily is amazing. What is the name of the dark pink Geranium in pic 12 please?

Annella It is =Geranium Cinereum Signal.Have just been and looked.
The Blue Campanula is Pulla.
Sticki The Lily is first season and the more i read about it the more i think I will be lucky to get it through the winter,it requires well drained sandy soil,My garden does not know what sand is.What i have is heavy clay with traces of Coal below.
Even though i have built up beds once it is wet it stays that way for months, but i will try.

I do hope you succeed! I have sandyish soil, I might have a try - is it expensive?

7 Jul, 2011

I have your soil without the coal Brian, dry as a bone now and wet all winter to the point that I can't walk on the lower lawn. It still amazes me that anything can live in it let alone flourish.

Sticki not as plants go they are available as growing plants from Dobies GC now(I looked) and as Bulbs in spring, would not try mail order on the plants,I think i paid £4.50 as a growing bulb.
Annella If electric becomes any dearer i am thinking of digging a shaft.lol

The water lily will grow in a bucket it does not need much room, not sure about roots freezing in winter though in small container, should think it would be safer in a cold green house.

Brian that lily is something else ! You have some super shots there.
My Heleniums are just coming in to flower.

Val my Heleniums are threatening to close off the path, think they like the rain and the slow release fertilizer i put under them.

7 Jul, 2011

Yep, I think they like the rain.

Have just come back from a fab day out to Stourbridge, sunny all day :0))

hello Brian
I've tried this lily for the last 3 or 4 seasons with no luck until this year.I have a pot of seedlings about 4 years old but not strong growth.Apparently it runs underground and can come up 2 yards or so from where you expect.I have Nymphaea pygmaea 'Helvola' growing in a small tub which has grown outside through the last 5 or 6 years, possibly longer.

Thanks bjs,
Valadel - in Stourbridge? Not so far from me. Did you go to Ashwood nursery?

Oh dear bjs - I sympathise! Not my ideal day!

It would be nice to succeed with the lily long term,it is certainly worth some effort.Yes i have read they travel underground when happy.
Youngdaisyd will no doubt be pleased that the waterlily is fully hardy.I have seen the pink form but never got around buying one perhaps I should.

That's what I would like YDD, but I know you have to have moving water or it just stagnates?

Stickie water moving not a problem the lily seems to filter it and the leaves hold back the sun

8 Jul, 2011

Fantastic Jamie, your pictures are so very stunning, I would love to grow that Lily but I have 3 cats and evidently the pollen is dangerous for them. Thanks for guiding me to this, your Heleniums are fantastic and I will wait in anticipation for mine to grow like yours, I would love it if they spread out the way yours have, I planted 7 plants together as I wanted to create some drifts so fingers crossed... I am going to make it a challenge to read all of your blogs over the coming weeks as your garden looks lovely and I dont want to miss any of it...
