Tale of Two Cockatoos.

Came home from work during the work and spotted these two on the staircase railing. Grabbed the camera and took some shots – then I wondered what they might be thinking during the whole thing.

Maybe this …..

These birds are called the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita).
They’re a large white parrot with a dark grey-black bill, a distinctive sulphur-yellow crest and a yellow wash on the underside of the wings. Sexes are similar, although the female can be separated at close range by its red-brown eye (darker brown in the male). They are a very noisy cockatoo, whether they’re resting or in flight and they will stay in the same area all year round.

Thanks Marguerite and Louise - it was such a great scene that was being played out before me. I've never really seen a cockatoo grab another with their claws and almost pull them back - just amazing!!

Thanks TT - these two seem to know each other well. They're both males - maybe brothers although I'm not sure that family sticks together with this species.

Fantastic Bernie, wish I lived in a country where I could have two Toos on my staircase LOL. Having two Galahs myself, not the same I know, but I would be in my element with those two! Great captions, well done!

Pamazon - this one is probably Australia's best known parrot. These birds are often kept as pets. They're extremely intelligent and are very good at learning to talk - the downside however is they can be very loud, mischievous and live for more than 70 years!

Oddbillie - there are some very interesting flies you know! I've seen more than my fair share of them over here.

enjoyed the blog...I was aware of the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo ... was not aware they hailed from Aussie.
I was introduced to them on the Tele by the New Jersey cop "berretta" (Robert Blake) Always thought it was cool how that bird answered the phone.

I remember that now! ... wow great memory Kmccue07! It's so true - these birds have the gift of the gab - you just have to careful what you say in front of them.

The main reason I watched the show was to see the bird "Fred" ...I couldn't tell ya much of anything else...had to do a quick search to find the "setting." LOL

15 Aug, 2009

That would be the only reason for watching that show - well done you for even remembering the name of the bird.

Love the cockatoos and captions: we've never had many close-ups with wildlife here in Sydney. Do you get wallabies hopping around on your lawn?

3 Sep, 2009

Thanks Pip c - yes we get lots of wallabies hopping around out property. Our place is located in the hills surrounding our city and its bordered on 3 sides by the bush ... so we're lucky we do get to see quite a bit of the local wildlife.
