An Early Winter Wander ... On This Queen's Birthday Long Weekend.

Yes I know it’s not actually the Queen’s birthday this weekend, but here in Australia we celebrate her day of birth in June with a public holiday.

Originally it started back in 1788 when the then monarch’s, King George 111’s, birthday was celebrated. Governor Arthur Phillip declared a holiday to mark the King’s birth, which was June 3rd. That tradition has continued on ever since as close as possible to that date, regardless of who the monarch may be.

So today, Monday June 11, 2012 is a day off work for most Aussies. I’ve had a great three-day weekend and with the glorious winter weather we’ve had up here in the northern tropics lately, it’s just been such a relaxing enjoyable break.

My long weekend has been filled with long periods of rest and relaxation out on the verandah, followed or preceded by strolls around the garden or visits from family and friends. Anyway, I though I would share what I saw when I wandered around the two garden spaces that are close to my house … my courtyard and shadehouse gardens.

Neither of these spaces can be regarded as lessons in great garden design or landscape principles. I am, as I state on the videos, simply a plant nut who loves to grow plants.

So if you’re interested in seeing what’s growing in my garden on this early Winter’s weekend, please click on the two links that follow.

Love your courtyard - what a lovely place to sit! (Nor in the rain though)

Thanks Nariz. Actually that shower of rain we had last weekend was very unexpected as we don't see much rain during our 'dry' season, for obvious reasons. But it was quite refreshing. We've now only had five days of rain since around the end of March which is pretty normal for this time of year.

Hi Bernieh
I love your photos and links
I always think it is so strange that Australia and my family in NZ celebrate the queens birthday with a days holiday while here we don,t lol

Yes that is really rather odd, Helen! Thanks to our first Governor we have this tradition now, but I'm not sure the coming generations will if Oz eventually becomes a republic!!! Maybe then it will become Republic Day ... it's hard for Aussies to give up their long weekends!!

Thanks Balcony. We don't see much rain at this time of the year so it was a welcome thing.

Thank you Neellan. It is a good time of year in the garden here right now.

Thanks Andy. Things are looking pretty good at the moment. Of course as we get closer to Springtime it all looks a lot better as the annuals flower more profusely.

Yes I agree, you will have to write a blog one day and add a video clip of your garden. It's great to actually get the bigger picture!

Glad you enjoyed the wander, Carol. It was indeed a lovely long weekend. It was hard getting up early yesterday morning though to return to work.

Thanks Sanbaz. We're very lucky here in the tropics as you rightly point out, our gardens never go to sleep. There's always something in bloom and of course, fabulous foliage all year round.
