Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

In my family, we kick off the holiday season with Breakfast on Thanksgiving morning, this year at the Brooklyn Diner and to the Thanksgiving Day Parade. What’s better than warm strawberry pancakes with maple syrup and sausage on a frosty morning? – Not much, lol! They will take good care of you here

Here is a glimpse of some of the highlights. Nobody seemed to mind the cold snowy weather – we just grabbed and extra sweater or hat and to the Parade. Let it snow…

The Brooklyn Diner

Thomas the Tank Engine… Negotiating around Columbus Circle

The weather was cold, grey and snowy, but not windy – which is important for a parade like this…

A rat? a bat? I’m not sure what this is, but it looks impressive floating down 5th Avenue

Good crowd there watching the parade. Cannot be so cold no one photographer wears gloves. Sounds like good tradition.

Looks colourful, Paul ... snow not too deep !

It reminded me of those photos of parades in China with long dragons.

Thanks for your comment - the temps hovered around 30F with periodic snows. My camera has so many buttons and knobs I could never operate it with gloves on. I wish you can hear the marching bands from all over the world. It is magical.

Terratoonie: The parade was fantastic. You quickly forget that you are slowly freezing to death, lol. I highly recommend you see it live at least once. However get out early to get a good viewing spot - - and those strawberry pancakes at the Brooklyn Diner makes it all worth it, dripping with maple syrup and hot coffee! LOL! My favorite!

Steragram Yes it does bring up memories of the Chinese New Year Parade and dragons. We celebrate that as well down in Chinatown - it's fantastic and not as cold.

Paul ... have you tried those gloves which have leave the finger-tips uncovered ?

29 Nov, 2014

No I have not but that's a clever idea. I appreciate the suggestion.

A wonderful colourful happy community event.
Thank you for the photographs.

My pleasure Dianebulley. I'm glad you enjoyed it. thank you.

I liked Spider Man best :D
It doesn't look like you've had much snow ....
Enjoy the celebrations !!!

What a great day out,Paul,,and well worth the freezing fingers..You wouldn't have managed those strawberry pancakes with gloves anyway ! Lol.Thomas would have loved Spiderman..his hero just at the moment .. Thanks for the photo's :o)

I think Spiderman was the highlight of the whole parade. Everybody cheered. In a way, so were the strawberry pancakes, lol! My all time favorite anyway - gloves are a no-no especially with the maple syrup dripping everywhere. The snow wasn't heavy, but you really felt it when those tiny ice crystals hit you in the face. Thanks Sandra. I hope everybody is enjoying the holiday season, now we look forward to Christmas, then New Years.

Fantastic blow up models Paul, especially Thomas the tank engine. The trouble in cold weather can be condensation on glasses and cameras too. It looks a lovely celebration to attend even if it is really cold.

Thank you Dorjac. It's quite an experience. You quickly forget about the cold. If you eat a nice breakfast or hot coffee beforehand, it's not too bad. It's usually not this cold.

What an amazing parade Paul. I am not sure but think the black creature is a dragon from a film. Thomas the tank engine..I used to read those stories to our son when he was little. We are having a change in temperature by the end of the week and may get a sprinkling of snow. I went leaf gathering yesterday in our little garden. The apple trees are just dropping the last of their leaves. Glad you had a good celebration.

Thank you Lindak. My whole property is blanketed in red, yellow & orange leaves from my maple tree. I'm not in a huge rush to rake it up, because I really like it like that - to the neighbor's shigrin, lol! Our temps in NY are pretty steady, around 32F with periodic fluctuations. Thomas the Tank Engine is near and dear to my heart too. Mom and dad would read me stories at night, but sometimes they would invent the stories as they went along - which I thought was more exciting or riveting. What types of apples do you grow? There is nothing like a hot apple pie to chase away the winter chills.

Just woken up and the temperature is zero but no visible frost. A really lovely sunny morning, but earlier when I went out the stars were amazing, and we can only see a small percentage of what's out there. We have one called a "COBRA" that is a cross between COX and BRAMLEY apples, medium root stock, so it's an eater and a cooker, but it's a new tree so perhaps next year we will get our first apples from it. We also have a HOWGATE WONDER (cooker) late October. JAMES GRIEVE (eater or summer cooker) as they are ready the end of August September. These are only espalier trees but have produced well this year. I love to cook and make apple pies and apple crumbles and sponge puddings. We go blackberrying along the hedgerows too, and put them in the freezer and I add them to the mix.

3 Dec, 2014

Sounds fantastic. I'm hungry. I love when other things are added to the mix. Have you ever tried Apple-cranberry? Delightful!

3 Dec, 2014

No Paul, but I sometimes add raspberries or blueberries. I made a pastry base yesterday, cooked some apples in lemon juice and water with a dash of sugar, then drained and added to the base and made some crumble mix and spread over the top then cooked for about 25 minutes in the oven and it came out super. First go at making a crumbly top to an apple pie.

4 Dec, 2014

I absolutely love apple-crumble and that sounds great. I would never think of cooking in lemon juice but what a clever idea.

4 Dec, 2014

Lemon juice stops the apples from going brown after peeling them and they taste rather nice. I put lemon juice into a drop of water when I cook salmon too.

4 Dec, 2014

Apples and raspberries - oh yes please!
Have you tried rhubarb with strawberries in a pie? Yum.
(Mix a pinch of bicarb in the cooked rhubarb to kill some of the acid)

4 Dec, 2014

That's one of my favorites Steragram. I'm gonna take up baking! As soon as my new kitchen is finished.

4 Dec, 2014

We grow rhubarb but for the moment it's all died back for the winter. We love rhubarb.
Hope the kitchen goes well with the fitting Paul. We've just discovered water in the corner of our lounge that Gerry has found stems from the boiler outlet in the kitchen, so we've dismantled the cupboards there and are awaiting the plumber early next week. Happy days.

5 Dec, 2014

Thanks Linda, My kitchen is looking dandy so far but right now I have eat out or try to use the microwave to make something, lol!

I'm sorry to hear about your boiler, I can certainly relate. My own boiler cracked and ruptured the very same day we were hit by hurricane Sandy. There was nobody for me to call for help because we were in state of emergency and everything was closed. I was knee deep in water in my basement. I'm glad that nightmare is over.

5 Dec, 2014

Linda, so sorry to hear bout your leak - what a rotten time for it to happen. Lets hope the plumber comes when he says he will. Hope it didn't damage your carpet?

Bathgate you are going to really enjoy having your kitchen cookable-in eventually! What did we do before the microwave revoution?

5 Dec, 2014

Steragram - I'd be out in the back yard rubbing sticks together - maybe try to catch a squirrel.

5 Dec, 2014

Hope you get your kitchen sorted by CHristmas week Paul.

6 Dec, 2014

Thanks Linda, I hope so too - long before Christmas.
