Ava is two this w/end, family converging, have a few modest fireworks but no carved pumpkin, Marrow to the rescue.

Dummy run with the table lamp looks ok. Freehand design so forgot to work in the negative at certain points but hey ho, its going on the compost heap anyway!

Bampy, you are So Inventive . . . no-one else would think of a Halloween marrow!! The kids will love it, and thank you for making me smile today. :)))

very easy Sticki, hollow-out, scrape flesh down to the hard skin, dessert spoon worked fine. Then I simply scraped the outer green skin with a small kitchen knife, just followed a pattern in my head. So no cutting involved apart from removal of the back which I cut top & bottom at a diagonal so it fits back in without having to use tyes. Plenty of scope for doing super dooper designs but I just had an hour so this was ok for a 1st attempt.

Trust me Sheila, the name did'nt pop into my head until it was finished, the galleon was the only practical thing I could think of determined by the shape restrictions of said marrow so a Ghost Ship seemed appropriate for the occasion I thought.

thanks for comments folks, possibly a tad OTT with the candles but as yet not lit so I have no idea how it will illuminate, I'll fire it up tonight & take a snap or two.

I'm now wondering just how small a lantern I can make ??

Our Garden Club ran a sale in the town centre the weekend before last. We sold a few plants, excess fruit and vegetables, pots of chutney, etc.
We also ran a competition (for anyone in the town) for the biggest pumpkin which the mayor helped to judge. With next year's Olympics in mind, we called it the Marrow-thon and the idea really caught in people's imagination. I think it's now likely to become an annual event

How clever is that? well done.

2 Nov, 2011

great title andrew!

2 Nov, 2011

A Marrow-thon, that idea could go global Andrew, I'd 'run with it' as they say in the States ! ( terrible marrow-pun) but excellent concept.

3 Nov, 2011

Great ideas you come up with, Bampy! Few people would ever have thought of making a ship lantern out of a marrow!

3 Nov, 2011

Wow!! That would have looked right at home in our "pirates" themed garden, Bampy. That scary skull 'n' crossbones chills me to the marrow (groan). Ingenious idea, and great craftmanship, me 'earty. :-)

Also, love the blog title, and Andrewr's "marrowthon".
:-D)

4 Nov, 2011

"chilled to the marrow" good one David !! LOL

5 Nov, 2011

I feel a new competition coming on - the Garden Olympics. As well as the Marrow-thon, there's the Egg Plant and Spoon race and Tossing the Caper :-)

5 Nov, 2011

love those ideas andrew!
throwing the jalepeno?

6 Nov, 2011

Perhaps I should start a new blog so we discus the ideas there! (yes, that was a deliberate mis-spelling. All together now <GROAN>)
