I retired in 2001 and took up gardening as one of my hobbies,( don´t we all ) and have a house and garden on the Algarve. I have two fish ponds and a small lake together with a fruit orchard, lawns and various beds of flowers and shrubs. My two loves are cannas and roses of which I have a formal rose garden and canna beds alongside the lake. The climate here is cool in winter and very hot in summer which limits the type of plants that can be grown although the soil is prodominantly sand (neutral) this tales a lot of feeding in the growing period especially with irrigation.
