i love growing sunflowers, im pretty new to gardening and dont have years of experiance or knowledge so last year i grew sunflowers, pretty easy, i had 15 good ones and my tallest was 148cm, i took seeds from them and this year i sowed….84, yes 84 sunflowers ha ha, me thinking ill have 84 big giant sunflowers this year, of the 84 i think about 35 germinated and got potted on.
one by one they got decimated by slugs and whatever else wanted a meal, by the time they were ready for the ground i had 19 left, i put the 2 biggest ans strongest ones in big pots individualy and they thrived and 2 together in a longer pot and they done well too.
the other 15 went into borders and slowly but surley got eaten……dam slugs, now in august i have 2 left in the border and the 4 good ones in pots, my tallest one this year is only 130cm, a whole 18cm shorter but ill blame the rubbish scottish weather weve had for that.
started with 84 ended up with 6 still standing, thanks slugs snails and the worst weather for decades, i love gardening ha ha xx

i think sunflowers are fantastic flowers, they have summer and happy growing all over them,i loved seeing all the different bees and insects they attracted and my wee girl calls them giant flowers ill take the seeds and grow probably the same amount if ,not more this year and hopefully have sunflowers everywhere this time next year, in reality ill have maybe 10 left if im lucky but hopefully we will get a better summer next year x

This is the only drawback of gardening - the weather!! Still the ones that've survived look pretty. Maybe we'll have a better summer next year eh?

The joys of gardening andrea, some of my flowers from seed still look like seedlings (poppy's) and others have been eaten to. i used to grow sunflowers, love the tall red ones and the smaller *Teddy bear* were my favourite, they look fluffy like a teddy bear.. The ones that have survived for you are gorgeous, if you leave them out when they go to seed the birds will love them..

Plastic bottles around the base of the plants with copper tape and copper tape around the pots this will keep the slugs and snails off.

Pitty the slugs ate some, but you've still got a few nice ones :o)

Well done. I sowed a packet in the ground in spring last year never to be seen again.

They are a lovely cheery sight Andrea, I also like them and have managed to hang on to three huge ones, I do have lots lots of the smaller ones as well though and they have been flowering nonstop since June...
