1 year ago almost to the day this lovely white fantail dove stopped by to visit us .. we expected him to be off as soon as he had rested …

We called him Snowball

He was in no hurry to leave

He stayed through the winter and was very well camouflaged in the snow

He is very fussy about his appearance always preening grooming and has regular bathing sessions ….. He sunbathes on the grass , thats a worry with the stray cats around ……

We worried about him being on his own , in the spring he was often seen puffing his chest out and doing his mating dance round a female collared dove who already had a mate …. he is so lovely and tame we wanted him to have a friend ….

Would you believe 2 weeks ago a racing pigeon stopped by , he / she has become best friends with snowball , I don,t think it will be in any hurry to leave either , it,s so tame it flys to the garage to meet and greet us when we come home , it comes to the back door for grain and almost takes it from our hands, Snowball loves the company , I supose we should report it somewhere … can you see the rings on it,s legs .. someone must be missing it …..

Thanks Sandra , Eileen said she had one and took it,s number to report it and then was told that as it had strayed they wouldn,t want it back and would ring it,s neck ... I don,t think I could risk that happening !

What a delight to have such a long stay visitor in your garden. Snowball obviously likes what is on offer there! You must be so pleased he has found a friend at last, maybe you should just turn a blind eye and let events take their own course. Many years ago we found an exhausted racing pigeon being terrorised by boys. On his leg ring was a phone number which we rang and were asked to put him on the train home! (In an addressed box of course!!)

He has been truly delightful Lily , we have loved having it here , we talk to it all the time outside .. I only hope nobody can hear me .. LOL..
Boys can be horrors can,t they , I can never understand them being cruel to an animal ..
I think I will wait a while to see if the decision is made for me , the racing pigeon might go off by it,s self ....

What a lovely story Lily...they both look very happy together. My mum used to keep doves & they are very loyal to their mates so if the boy racer stays you might have a happy ending.

Thanks Bb I think I have decided to do that , I would rather see birds free to come and go as they wish .. I always have a very strong desire to set birds free from cages when I see them shut in ..........

Amy i agree with BB let nature take its course, i dont like to see caged birds either.

What a beautiful bird Snowball is, I've been told that under racing pigeon rules the owner of a bird is obliged to take it back, but that doesn't mean it won't be killed as they're no good if they don't home. So glad he's got a mate:-)
