What a strange year its been so far ,it’s flashing past so quickly I can’t keep up with it .
Our holiday in Scotland was a washout , we then spent a few dry but sunless days in York last month which we enjoyed very much ,a beautiful place to visit .
Our son Ian with his two boys were due to spent a holiday with us after their camping trip in Wales they surprised us by ringing to ask if they could arrive earlier than arranged as it hadn’t stopped raining in Wales they were soaked through and would arrive on the Thursday instead of the following Saturday . We thought we would have to travel to Wales to pick them up as Ians back had gone into muscle spasms after walking to the top of Snowdon , the harder route not the mountain railway track ..he could hardly move the next day but managed to drive here where he has had lots of massage he says its beginning to feel much more comfortable …
I was very relieved when the sun decided to come out of hibernation last week as when they arrived they had a car full of soggy wet clothes including big sleeping bags etc. I was also thankful my new washing machine had been delivered as my old one stopped working previously , I couldn’t complain it was 13 years old which they tell me is some kind of a record …
The boys are still with us and are enjoying trips to the coast Catching crabs also bringing home Cockles & Samphire ,delicious fruits of the sea .
They have Table tennis in the garage ,Billiards in the Arcon plus a darts board ,swing ball etc. they helped to pick Blackberries to make Blackberry & Apple pies … I tried my hardest to get them to work in the garden but to no avail that hasn’t happened yet … ..
We’ve done our duty baby sitting daughters families Guinea Pigs ( Eric & Duggie ) we may be roped in for further duties in the future as before they left for their holiday they went to an animal rescue center where they chose a Collie puppy from Wales they couldn’t wait to come back home to collect the puppy his name is Jep our granddaughter Elloise is going to be responsible for taking him to training classes maybe she could train Jep to round up the Guinea Pigs :o)
These are my reasons for not keeping up on GOY for some time I apologize for any missed messages also photos still to be seen I’m hoping to catch up ASAP after the boys have gone .

I spoke to soon the boys Leon & Samuel ages 11 and 14 are helping Dad & Granddad to saw down a tree I suppose that is more fun than weeding especially if there’s going to be a Bonfire at the end of it !

JEP

Happy gardening friends :o))

What a lovely family time you sound to be having Amy! But hard work for you as well...with all that soggy laundry! It has stopped raiing here again and the sun is out, but very breezy and cool...definitely not summer. We did have one good day on Thursday. Rachel and I have bought our train tickets and booked our hotel for a girls trip to York in October. We are only having two nights, but looking forward to it very much as there will be lots of lovely shops and our hotel has a Cocktail bar!! :)) Jep is so cute....keep up the good work and don't worry, we'll still be here when you get time for Goy!

So nice to hear from you again on gou. Jep is an absolute cutie. The extended brood all seem to have chosen their tasks, which does not include helping grandma ( doesn't that sound, mmm !) weeding. Enjoy them, they will be grown up so soon.

Jep looks lovely.
I think many people have had wash outs this year on holiday. Your family have certainly had more than thei fair share!

Hi Amy, seems like you had an enjoyable time in spite of the weather. I have no idea what Samphire is. What does it taste like? I just googled it, but that doesn't help, lol interesting! You are right, the summer is going by like a flash! I better get to the beach at least once. I appreciate your determination to have a good time and always keeping a positive attitude. Family is everything!

I hope your weather has improved now !

Karen you will love York try Betty's Tea room if you can get in we couldn't this time as the queue was far to long also go on an evening ghost tour its a fun thing :o)
Thank you all for your kind words , it is busy but fun to ..
Jep has settled in with our daughter and family he loves playing with them but doesn't like night times being on his own he wees and poos in his bed ' Yuk ' Daughter is tired from getting up every half hour to take him outside training him to do his duties !
Paul / Rose, Samphire is a sea plant which grows on the shoreline and salty mudflaps it looks a little like seaweed with fleshy branches it grows approx. 6" in height , you pull it up by the root wash it well and then boil it for a few mins . you can eat it on its own with melted butter or soak it in vinegar , it's very good for you as it's rich in vitamins ,it's also called poor mans Asparagus on our coast ..the problem we have is that the trendy Chefs have caught up with it using it in their gourmet restaurants which could strip the delicate growing balance on our marshes if they gather to much ... the best way to eat it is to pick a portion up by the root draw it through your teeth stripping the green veg.off the stem part ....
The weather is cloudy today Rose and a chill in the air :o(

Oh Amy that was so interesting and I was there with you facing the damp washing and keeping everyone fed and amused!! I am exhausted for you but can smile also at such a lovely family time together! 'Running on empty!' comes to mind!! I felt much the same when our family came to stay and then when they had gone home, I cried when I found a little blue sock tangled up in a sheet! Happy days!

It has been a strange summer and a bit of a let down to be honest! There are so many leaves lying under our apple tree that it looks like autumn has arrived already!

Enjoy the remainder of the summer and relax on the sunny days and start looking at the spring bulbs!!

x

I'm glad you could see it as it is Chris ,its the same here after they've gone we always find something belonging to them plus a few missing bits of toys under the beds ! when they leave we wave like mad as they go up the road and they hang their arms out of the car windows waving until we are out of sight it suddenly feel so very quiet without them ... Thats when we collapse in our favorite chairs before tackling cleaning up operations ....
I do hope we have a late Indian summer we need something to perk us up before winter ... x

Hi Amy, I see you're in the neighbouring county to me (added you to favs). It has been a funny year so far weatherwise.
Sounds like you've had a lovely family time with your son & boys visiting even tho they leave you feeling Phew!
Jep looks so sweet, no doubt you'll be dog sitting before you know it, lol.
Never had samphire (or heard of it) not sure I fancy it either.

Hi Gf ...Thank you , so your home is Silly Suffolk LOL... my hubby is from there as well ,You've never heard of Samphire I thought everybody had until I wrote this, I'm amazed ! As Sue ( Steragram ) says it can be a little salty the trick is to give it a good soak before boiling it ,Its a bit like Marmite Love it or hate it :o)

Amy, I prefer Sunny Suffolk.
I always find Norfolk a few degrees cooler & sometimes downright cold, used to make a monthly trip to the Norfolk Dumpling for aquatic club meeting & my daughter lived in Norwich for a while too.

20 Aug, 2015

I would certainly try it. I ate a fried grasshopper in Thailand. How much worse can it be?

20 Aug, 2015

Thank you for the tip Amy - I steamed it. Will try again and soak and boil it instead. But won't this kill off all the nutrients?

20 Aug, 2015

You're always so busy Amy!! I bet you've loved having the boys even if they haven't weeded yet, what a lovely family time you're having! Ooh Jep is gorgeous, no wonder they fell in love with him.....future holidays with Gma are on the cards I bet.....:)) X

Sue you only need a small amount of water and then only simmer gently for a few mins, take a piece out run a fork through the Samphire from root to tips if it comes off easily its ready to eat , I'm not at all sure about the loss of nutrients its so quick it probably doesn't lose to much ,
Hi Janey Jep is settling down brilliantly after several sleepless night he wanted to sleep with the family and I don't blame the little fellow for trying ;o) .. we've been staying in Rockingham Forest for the last week recovering Lol x
