You wouldn’t believe how excited I was to see buds and then flowers appear on this tree , nothing special about that you might think ,but to me it’s very special I’m thrilled to bits ..

I plucked the seed pod off a tree 15/20 years ago ,after taking it home and planting it in a pot I watched it grow until it was approx 1 ft high and then planted it in my garden .
It grew slowly year after year , nothing happened never any signs of flowers I had long ago decided it wasn’t to be ..
That is until last Easter weekend 3 weeks ago I was walking round the garden thinking about how horrendous the previous day had been when I spied buds on the tree I couldn’t believe my eyes .

Koda was our daughters family dog a beautiful Husky he went to doggie heaven the day before on Good Friday after an agonizing day of meetings with emergency vets and xrays , he couldn’t be saved ,the family are heart broken at his loss … coincidence or not I’ve started to call the tree ’ Koda’s Tree ’

Sleep well old friend

Aw Amy Koda was certainly a beautiful boy, I know how sad and upsetting all this has been for you, but that is such a lovely idea calling the stunning Cercis, Kodas tree. It has flowered just at the perfect time for you and over time will bring you smiles of joy as you remember the happy times he shared with all your family. XX

What a lovely end to the sad story of Koda's death, what perfect timing for the Cercis to blossom its as if it was meant to be Koda's tree all along, a perfect tribute to remember Koda;0)

Koda was a beautiful dog! What lovely timing to have cercis blossom at last! Worth the long wait! :))

So sorry to hear about Koda Amy, but what a coincidence that the tree should flower just at the right moment to cheer you up a bit.Well worth the wait :-)

Awww, Amy . . . that's so moving. Extraordinary how sadness can be transformed into a small happiness. I do sympathise about the loss of such an adorable Husky, and congratulate you on your patience for growing the lovely Cercis yourself - perfect to name it the Koda tree :)

Thank you all for your kind comments ,I can't tell you how much Koda is missed , our daughter has bought the children 2 baby guinea pigs not the same we know but it is giving them something else to care for .

what a beautiful tree to help remember a special dog. Beautiful on both counts but such a sad end for all your family to lose a treasured pet. I know all about that too. I still miss my westie nearly a year since he died and he was 15 plus years and had been a brilliant pet. We do get very attached to our animals, the children will be very sad but will enjoy their new found pets I am sure. :O) Such a pretty flower on that tree must go and google it now as I have not heard of it before. :O)

Sorry to read such sad news Amy, its heartbreaking to lose a much loved pet, its seems as if the tree has flowered for Koda........

Aaaaw Amy so sad to read this so upsetting when we loose our much loved pets, that's a lovely picture of Koda, lovely that you'll remember him every time that tree blooms now, beautiful blossom for a beautiful boy :-)

Beautiful boy remembered ♡

We used to see this tree a lot in Spain Amy, it was called the tree of love, I'm sure it's especially flowering this year for you and your family with all the sadness about Koda.

One of the first trees to flower in late winter over there, the Catalans would grow it along the walkways and prune it to keep it low and the branches wide, then it would appear as a street long canopy of pink and with the large heart shaped leaves it would shade the pavements during high summer.....

Janey that sounds a lovely idea I can just imagine walking through a canopy of pink blossom I'd love to do that but don't think I can wait another 20 years Lol .. xx

I'm a great believer in things happen for a reason and I'm sure your beautiful tree has bloomed to ease your heart over the loss of Koda. Your patience at growing the seed has been rewarded, just a the right time.

9 May, 2014

Amy, what a sad and worrying Easter time you and the family must have had. It's so hard to make these decisions and even more so what it happens so suddenly. I'm so pleased Koda's tree has cheered you and I prefer the name too! It is a real beauty, like like that gorgeous photo of Koda. You certainly are a very patient gardener and it's been worth it :)

I am also sorry to hear about your dog Amy. They are such important members of family.
Good name for a tree.

What a lovely story Amy! -Sad but especially beautiful too. Thanks for sharing.

Someone on Goy sent me some seeds of this tree, I sadly have forgotten who it was :0 (
The germinated and are around 6" thats inches :0)
And I have about half a dozen.....
one day they will be as beautiful as this one.....I hope.......

9 May, 2014

Oh, that's great news Pam . . . it was me! You have done well to germinate your seeds: mine didn't work :(

9 May, 2014

What a beautiful dog he was and the tree will be a lovely reminder of Koda every spring. So nice that it chose this time to flower and lighten your grief.

Waddy I think you are probably right i'm sure there's a reason for most things , it was terribly sad Gill it was the hardest thing ever sitting in the vets waiting 4 hours for the results ,Thank you Klahanie / Anne we appreciate your kind words .
Well done Pam you will be able to grow a hedge as Janey describes above that would be lovely , Sheila you will have to beg one back from Pam :o)) Koda was beautiful HB a scallywag when he was little he use to love pulling the children along on their sledge in snow , that's what we must remember the good times ...

9 May, 2014

Oh so sad about Koda :( I remember him from a previous blog some time ago.

There are 2 of those trees in a nearby town centre. They are very pretty with loads of flowers :) I'm pleased yours has flowered now ...

9 May, 2014

I thought it was Sheila , thsnk you so much xxx
they are small but seem happy, its taken a couple of years for them to grow big enough to transplant into individual pots, they are living permanently in the gh......could be a while before they get as lovely as this tree

10 May, 2014

You're welcome, Pam, and evidently the right person to nourish tree seeds! I gave many to my gardening group last summer, but haven't heard of ONE member who's had success. My own lovely tree didn't have many blooms this spring (they're almost over now), but I will save seed again, and have another go :))

10 May, 2014

So sorry to hear about the beautiful Koda, it's heart breaking isn't it. My girls (rescues) are about 10 and 12 years old, could be older, and I will be totally lost without them. I bought a cercis Lavender Twist 3/4 years ago, it's almost six feet tall at the moment and it weeps. I have a few buds on this year, but nothing to write home about, I don't think it likes it in my garden. I hope you put a pic of your whole koda tree on when it's in full flower:-)

10 May, 2014

So sorry to hear about Koda, such a beautiful dog. It seems so fitting though that Kodas tree flowered at that exact moment. A lovely tribute to a lovely family member.

If any of you read the Mail, they had an offer of a Cercis chinesis, avondale, tree for £10.99 (page 63) in Fridays paper.(phone to order 08444724161 ref.MGS438) I am tempted after seeing your beautiful tree Amy. x

Hywel you will have to wait for the trees in your town to go to seed and then pick some , Bg fingers crossed for a better display next year and keep cuddling your lovely pets , Thank you Sam it was meant to be :o) Thanks for that Grandmage treat yourself I wonder how old what size they are it must be quicker than from seed !

10 May, 2014

So sorry to hear about Koda. Losing a loved pet is so very hard, but now the tree will always remind you.
I'd no idea they would grow in this country - what a lovely surprise to hear Hywel say they grow only a couple of hours drive from us!

10 May, 2014

Amy, it doesn't state size! Probably grown in a pot and yes certainly quicker than seed, but not so much fun. :)

thanks Grandmage it will help any other people who might look them up :o)
Losing a pet is very distressing Sg. we are grateful the lovely Koda tree bloomed in his memory , in my book it states the Cercis is a native of the Mediterranean and that it's not completely happy in our climate ,it succeeds in the south east but is not recommended for cold or clayey gardens , I suppose we are lucky after reading that it survives here at all ...

Thank you Keith , It's been a terribly sad time especially as it was so unexpected ,Koda was playing happily in the garden with the grandchildren chasing a ball when he fell over screaming , the emergency vet could hear him over the phone but wouldn't even come out to see him unless as they said it was to put him down ,we had to take him into the vets and then on another 60 mile trip to another surgery where they had the equipment to xray him it was horrendous, he cried all the way it's going to take a long time to get it out of our heads .. we then had to sit in the waiting room for 4 hours listening to him we were then told to go in to say our goodbyes as they said if the xrays proved he wouldn't have a quality of life they would put him to sleep ,they rang that evening to say they had put him to sleep ! one disc was completely out and another 3 almost out ,they said because of his size there was no way he was going to keep still for the discs to repair . :o(

13 May, 2014

Horrific!
I spent a lot of money on Candy, but in the end I had to make the call. The vet came to the house to do it and took her away for cremation. After I picked the ashes up and settled that bill, I went to the vets to pay their bill and was told that there was nothing to pay.
Four years to the day I came down to find that Jack had gone unexpectedly in the night.

13 May, 2014

Oh how traumatic for both of you xxx

I'm sorry Keith for reminding you off your own sad days and pets ,we lost our own Barney 4 years ago they put him to sleep in the back of our car with OH holding and cuddling him OH was totally heart broken we said we wouldn't have any more dogs after that , Koda was thankfully fully insured even so they wouldn't even look at him until it was proved ,it would have cost them £ 4000.00 with the cremation on top of that , I suppose the vets see it all so often they become hardened to it . It was very traumatic Pam they are still in shock xx

13 May, 2014

My two old girls were lucky, we had them from little pups and they went to sleep right here, Kate in her favorite spot under the apple tree and Gemma in my arms in her bed bless them xxx
its a few years now and I can think of them and smile.

I'm so sorry for Koda and his family , my heart goes out to you x

13 May, 2014
