A SURPRISING GARDEN Part 1

A week ago we spent a few days in and around Rockingham Forest we were able to see the Kites soaring above the tree tops an amazing site …
Being so close to Burghley house we decided we should pay it a visit , we never did make it as far as the house we spent all out time in what is called ’ The Garden of Surprises ’ plus .. ’ The Contemporary Sculpture Garden ’
The Garden of Surprises was comprised mainly of water features , children are invited to wear swim suits and towels are available for hire in the garden shop .
I will choose a few photos to show what you can expect if you are ever in the area it’s well worth a visit ..
The first thing to strike us as we entered the grounds was the abundance of Mistletoe growing on the Lime trees .

A few of the many water features

The misty jewelled Moss house

Another water Rill

The Transforming Obelisks representing , Earth , Fire ,Water and Wind

A Sand Timer

Longitude Dial

When we arrived at the exit there was a curtain of water with a small gathering of people wondering how they could get out without getting soaked ,one brave soul took a step up to the water causing it to stop long enough for people to pass through ..

There was so much more to see but I couldn’t possibly put 80 photos on here , it gives you an idea of what to expect .
The Sculpture garden I found even more interesting I’ll put that in part two …

Pleased you enjoyed it Amy, I can see Burghley from my bedroom window and I never tire of going there, the gardens are amazing, I'm not surprised you didn't make it into the house, to see it all without rushing definitely needs more than one day, did you get to wander the private gardens as well, they are not always open but well worth a visit........

Certainly worth a visit, very interesting water features, I would imagine children would love dashing through them, looking forward to the next set of photographs, I am sure everybody would love to see all 80 Amy.......a few at a time perhaps?

Isn't that just wonderful and amazing?! A paradise for children! I bet no child will ever forget a visit here, I certainly wouldn't....especially with that exit!

I'm so pleased you all enjoyed it as much as I did , the water curtain exit was so well thought out, I felt sorry when we first arrived there as someone was pushing an elderly person in an invalid chair there was no way they could have hurried and you could see they were beginning to look panicky and were standing staring at it , I must admit I was wondering how wet I would be if I rushed through at top speed LOL ...

Lincs you lucky girl being able to go whenever you like and to take your time roaming round the grounds , No unfortunately we didn't see the private grounds it seems another trip will have to be on the cards. we walked over to see the Deer before leaving :o)

Did you visit this place 20 years ago before this transformation Diane , it must have changed a lot in that time is it for the better do you think ?

I chuckled at the thought of you trying to time the water and therefore not get wet, no good for wheelchairs or pushchairs but there is a gap in the hedge on the left near a mirror, I followed someone through a couple of years back, mind you its much more fun to go through the water.........
I personally think the changes are for the better, its made it a much more enjoyable place for the family as a whole, they cater for all age groups, lets face it the kids can get bored when the old'uns want to browse and enjoy the gardens, at Burghley its fun to search out all the sculptures and even at my age I can spend hours in the Garden of Surprises, have to have a go at all the dials and set off all the elements, lol....

It was great fun Lincs something for everyone ,I wish we had gone earlier in the day instead of after lunch we would have had more time then , I didn't see a gap in the hedge near the water curtain but someone in front of us who was ready to take the plunge found out that as soon as they trod near the water it stopped it long enough to cross ,I expect it's some kind of pressure pad ,I love it all and yes we did twindle with all the dials and turned handles where the water tube is it filled the tube up with water or lowered it which ever way you turned it , I didn't put a photo of that on did I :o))
