Amy ours are still going strong also, I do not like to cut them back, just in case we have a bad winter.....

I will be off to have a look Tet ... they a lovely almost an all year round plant aren't they Angela we always cut ours down but we also take a lot of cuttings to replace any that don't make it through the winter , I have found as well that you can layer a stem into the ground with a piece of bent wire where it will happily take root you can then move it to where ever you like ........

Amy when do you layer yours?
8 Nov, 2011
I use to do it at any time in the summer Angela , I don't see why you can't do it now so that they can become established over winter , I only found out by accident one day when I was tidying up and found the stems laying sideways had rooted where they had become covered in soil , Good luck with it !

They are looking really good for November are'nt they.

Thats a great tip Amy...wonder if it will work with phlox and perhaps erysimum bowles mauve? Might be worth a try!
8 Nov, 2011
they are pretty Amy, i had two but lost them, are they fussy where they are planted.
8 Nov, 2011
They are all Beautiful Amy, wouldnt like to choose between them, Janette sent me two cuttings which I lost last winter think one was Czar, good luck with yours;0)

I'm not sure about that Tet the Penstemons grow kind of hairy roots from the stems It's always worth a try !
Our soil is acid San I don't know if that makes a difference .. That's a shame Carole your winters are colder than ours perhaps to cold ... :o(

They are all lovely Amy. Thanks for the layering tip!
8 Nov, 2011
Ive got a feeling that phlox do too..but erysimums might be a bit like carnations...
8 Nov, 2011
Thanks Amy might try that tomorrow....nothing ventured.

I bet they jeer up the garden at this time of year..
10 Nov, 2011
I have Penstemon 'Catherine de la Mare' a low grower that spreads and layers itself naturally, I never thought about trying some of my taller ones. Thanks for the tip Amy, I will be out in the gardening pinning them all down at the weekend Lol! Whatever the weather ;o)
10 Nov, 2011
I have 'Garnet' which is still flowering but sadly lost a well established clump of 'Sour Grapes' to last winter's weather. Mine have self-layered in the past too. Hope the pinning goes well.
11 Nov, 2011
They certainly do Mushy , Lol Angela / Annella I can see you out there now, come on in it's coffee time :o)))
It seems that a lot of you have found out that they do self -layer Xela it's a shame you lost your Sour Grapes ;o(
