Help I,ve just been out to the fruit cage and there is not one leaf left on the gooseberry bushes , they are loaded with horrible little caterpillers , I know that you can spray before this happens but we don,t like to do that , will the same thing happen in the same spot next year if they are in the soil , if so do we need to get rid of them

My gooseberry bushes suffer from this most years but it doesn't seem to have harmed them. I give them a good feed in early spring and off they go again (must remember to pick my fruit crop in the next day or two)

Sorry to hear about your Gooseberry bushes - but don't forget that the caterpillars will grow into butterflies or moths! You are very eco-friendly... The eggs will not be in the soil next year, the butterflies/moths lay the eggs on the bushes, on the underside of the leaves. Only you can make the decision about picking them off/spraying the bushes.
