What's up? Dock!

Out came the tin of elbow grease on Saturday and I made a start on the weed-wilderness at the bottom of the garden.

\

somewhere under here is my trusty wheelbarrow

\

\

Here are two unnamed weeds which look as if they might not be quite so undesirable?! What do you reckon? I think the insects like the slim purply one.

\

\

This oak tree is not happy, and it looked like this last summer too, though happy inbetween times (?).
As it’s not in the best place – it would overshadow my neighbour’s veg if allowed to grow taller – I think we’ll have to remove it, so there’s another nice big messy job sometime soon, whoopee.

\

Luckily husband’s little row of potatoes are a bit happier now they have more light, and I must continue freeing the ground immediately around them from weeds.
\

Today (Sunday 19th) has been so wet, and I’ve had other stuff to do for my children etc, so I’ve yet to continue cutting back and then digging – and the green bin’s already full, oh dear!
So the only step of progress today was treating myself to a new handfork. It has a bright pink handle, which I’m hoping means I find it and return it to the greenhouse more often. Hm, old habits die hard though.

In case the coming days stay rainy and keep us indoors, here is some proof that at least one day was warm and sunny:

That’s the inula keeping the bees and butterflies happy Spritz!

\
Potentilla “Monarch’s Velvet” – my favourite colour

\
I could even get my legs out. The stinging nettles had a field day, I can tell you.

\
Didn’t notice that my tea mug snuck into this shot. What I wanted to say was that this little fellow, any day now could turn into this

\

Over and out for now! thanks for all your cheering messages after my last sad rant.
Best regards, Weeding x

That slim purply red fellow in an early shot is an invasive member of the bettony/deadnettle family. I personally get rid. I dont like the smell of the leaves either. it is a british native / wild flower / weed depending on your choices.

you certainly have a wild bit down there dont you?

Your second "weed", looks like Tansy Tanacetum vulgare, It used to be used as a flavouring for egg dishes like omelletes in days gone by, it has highly aromatic leaves whhich are the partthat was used , it was also used as a substitute/instead of spices such as nutmeg and cinnamon in cake making, and tansy cake was popular at easter time until compartively recently.
It was also used to drive mice away as the scent is so strong and to keep flies off meat.
Culpeppers herbal acredits it with preventing miscarriages, advises using it as a mouthwash and eye lotion.
The genus name Tanacetum and the common name Tansy comes from the Greek word for immortality, for among its other properties the plant was believed to confer eternal life on those who drank an infusion of it.
It is also supposed to bring luck (so the gypsies say) if you place a sprig of flowers in your left shoe.

Nice garden and blog I also like your sense of humour but if i were you I would keep the Tansy.

awh, thanks all. Not much progress recently as we were away for a bit. It was dark this evening when we returned from a long hike (Luton airport, oh dear) so I'll brace myself for this mess in daylight, 2 or 3 weeks on!
thanks for all the info, Indy. Didn't know all that.

Nope, sorry Weeding, I'm not able to ID the pic 'blue with fluffy white bits', can't remember seeing anything like that for ummmm....Oh gosh....I don't know when////

Great start on this part of your wilderness.
Your plants are looking good, some great colours and the Inula especially looks terrific.

That was fascinating Indy, pretty sure we got some of that in the area, seen it (or something like it) round about the hills. Might pot some up and put the kettle on!
Will try it on the workshop mouse population too.
