I do try not to get frustrated with the gloom but fail!
It keeps going dark just as I’m getting into the swing of it out there, aargh.
I can sympathise with those who suffer in degrees from seasonal affective disorder. What a lot of waiting we do in the winter. Many times I just continue in the dark, tripping over abandoned prunings and the odd garden implement. Today in at dusk I was sawing logs for a neighbour and tending a damp-squib sort of bonfire. (Yesterday’s was a roaring success).
Never mind. Husband helpfully slayed a prickly and over-rampant shrub this afternoon, and we both took out loads of strawberry plants which had made themselves comfy without ever producing fruit. Decided next growing season to concentrate on other veg and fruit instead, they were taking up quite a lot of space. And although it was perishing cold, at least it didn’t rain!
There is a nice big nearly-clear area now in the centre of the garden for our next veg. plot. Beans are always successful, and we want to try French as well as runner. Peas are delicious, and so far not complicated. Florence fennel is also on our list, as is multicoloured chard, spinach, kohlrabi, and husband thinks broccoli. I don’t mind – I’ll eat it if it’s successful! Think it may not be as easy as our other choices. When we moved in here in early September the previous owners, v keen and active gardeners, left masses of growing broccoli and it was delicious. We were eating it for weeks, yum. Didn’t quite balance out financially against the defunct heating system which was soon condemned and removed – they’d possibly not known about the dangers – but hey that’s another story and not a garden-relevant one.
Oh, and rocket, which is always as keen as mustard.
I still have a sad number of daff bulbs languishing in the porch which I need to plant, because I can’t decide where. Terminal dithering. We’ve got quite a big garden, but all available bed space seems to be fairly full.
Here are the latest photos luckily taken in daylight, most of them one bright morning during the first serious frost we had several weeks back now. It’s taken me a while to find the correct cable to upload them : )) If there are no photos visible here (i’ve never done a blog with pics b4) it means I could not do it, so try looking on my homepage. They seem to be all bunched up at the bottom, and I’d sooner have them interspersed… How do you all DO all this clever stuff?!
Happy Advent greetings to anyone reading this. Only 3 weeks to go in the UK to the shortest day – chins up!

Weeding you sound very well organised to me , a good choice of veg. I had a smile when I read the bit about the Broccoli , going back to when my daughter was at home , when ever I cooked Broccoli it didn,t matter how carefully I checked each piece my daughter always seemed to get the bit with the catterpillar in it ... lol ...I think it put her off for life ..
A very Happy Advent to you to .... :0)

We've invested in head torches - now it doesn't matter if its 6pm or 1am - we can see just as well!!!

What a good idea, I could use a head torch when I am out at night hunting for snails in my veggie growing season.

Oh, I never thought of that. I have a "headlamp" that I use when I'm underneath a tractor or something but I never thought to use it in the garden. Thanks Fourseasons.

I must get a new one. Son used to have one a while ago, and literally loved it to bits.
Don't stand opposite anyone else who's wearing one though, it's very offputting!

Good luck with the veggie growing - I'm your neighbour over in Hereford :-) I don't like the dark evening either, but my hobby that takes the place of gardening at this time of year is drawing and painting - helps to pass the dark evenings - also dreaming about what I will be growing in the spring - like what veggies to grow...... :-)

You did it! The photos are clearly visible. Congratulations. Now all you need to do is to pause after a paragraph and insert your photo, then continue typing. Why not play with a blog a bit - you don't have to publish it to view it since Ajay made it easier.
You have been busy - I went to church and haven't been in the garden at all today - just TOO cold.
