A Tour Of The Lake District*

*We have just returned from a five day coach tour of the Lake District although it is a very beautiful area , our experience of travelling by coach was not a happy one. It took 10 hours from Manchester to get to the hotel and coming back even longer we left the hotel at 10 am and were not back home until 8p.m in the evening. This was mainly due to the number of pickups and the time waiting around to transfer from the feeder mini bus to our coach!

Well now I have got my grumbles out of the way here are some of the more enjoyable parts of our trip!

Day One 1 hour stay at Grasmere, definately not enough time to explore and enjoy all the interesting and historical sights

Grasmere is a delightful little villlage with a beautiful backdrop of hills and river and a stunning church, we bought Gingerbread Men for our son from the famous Gingerbread shop

A pretty little Riverside Tea room for our morning cuppa!

Now the Floral displays at this B.B. you just couldn’t resist getting the camera out for!

We visited the lovely little church and the churchyard where William Wordsworth and his family were buried, we would have liked to visit the house where he lived and also gone on the Daffodil Walk alongside the river which had also been made in his memory, but it was time to get back to the coach

Next stop Bowness on Windermere a lovely bustling harbour with lots to see and enjoy we spent 2hours here

I have never seen so many Swans, they were so tame and very BIG! our visit

We ended our visit to Bowness with Chips anf Fish which was greatly enjoyed by us and the Gulls LOL.

Our next stop was the highlight of the holiday for me a boat trip on Ullswater.

The Ladysmith

We both thoroughly enjoyed the boat trip despite the fact that it was very windy on the retun journey and as you can see turned qiute choppy out there

Day 2 Wet and cold morning, our first stop was Cockermouth a little village that took the brunt of last year floods. Lots of the buildings were boarded up and it felt very much like a ghost town, you can see some of the repair work taking place to try to protect these cottages which overlook the river
The two hours allocated to the visit was far too long and we were glad to get on the coach again and on our way to our next visit.

We spent the afternoon in the pretty town of Keswick which was a very interesting and bustling town with lots to see. we would have liked more time here to see the lake and church, but found that by the time we had eaten and explored the main streets it was time to get back on the coach .
On the way back to the hotel we visited a Woolen Mill Shop, where we had an hour to look around after ten minutes we had looked at everything and after Keswick found the range of goods was very limited and the prices sky high.

Day 3 On our way again and our first stop today was Whitehaven harbour and town. Our walk along the seafront was very bracing and chilly and although it would have been very pleasant on a nice sunny dayt we made a quick exit into the town.
We found a very pretty Chapel which was the remains of St Oswalds Church that had been destroyed by fire in 1994. The floral displays in the grounds were stunning and there were lots of statutes and Memorials which payed tribute to the many children of Whitehaven who sadly lost their lives working down the mines during the 1700s, some were as young as five years and in some instances whole families were victims of mining accidents, it was a very touching experience.

The next stage of our journey took us along the thrilling and magnificent Kirkstone Pass, if you have never been on a white knuckle ride this one is not to be missed! Tha scenery was breathtaking and the narrow winding road climbing up the Pass was hairaising in parts, especially when we came across a coach travelling in the opposite direction SCARY!! I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience just wish I had been in a position to be able to take some pictures. The othe side of the Pass brought us to The Ravenglass Railway Station where we enjoyed a very pleasant 80 minute trip on a Minature Steam Engine

Well Folks thats The End Of The Line our tour is over and tomorrow we return home, hope you enjoyed it!*

I enjoyed your pictures and it brought back some happy memories of trips I've made to the Lake District...the scenery is very pleasing to the eye. I've always been driving so could stop at will...too bad about your experience by coach although you did get to some lovely places. Thanks, PP.

Enjoyed it very much, PP, as I have said before we enjoyed many walking holidays in the Lake District and used to stay just a few miles from Cockermouth, such a shame that it is still trying to recover from the terrible flooding. I remember the pass well, three daughters and myself all holding our breaths until we were over the top and safely down the other side :)

Ten hours ? My goodness, you could have flown to another continent in that time ! How frustrating that must have been . Your photos have brought back some pleasant memories as OH and I stayed with friends in Cockermouth shortly after we were married. I remember Keswick and Ravenglass quite clearly, as we used the bus and train to travel around, stunning scenery.
Thanks for sharing your break away, loved it. : o )))))

Lovely blog,Carole, sorry about your coach journey,it sounds horrendous.I can't believe it took so long.Lots of memories for me there, definitely not enough time at Grasmere, and Keswick, and i agree, far too long in Cockermouth.I used to live 8 miles away from there,so know there isn't much to do.At least you had a good time at the other places,...Kirkstone pass ?wheeeeeeeeeee.:o)

Sorry to hear about the time it took Carole must of been frustrating losing time to see more. Gorgeous planting especially that garden, such wonderful photos. I felt sea sick a bit on that boat lol, lovely sights there, shame about the floods it will eventually get back hopefully like Boscastle went there a few years ago and same happened there, when I went they had repaired most of it back, Price Charles gave aid to that one though. Can understand your feelings of the child miners when my dad was 17, the pit collapsed on him burried alive, they thought he was dead for sure working from when he was 13 down there, he came out with broken pelvis doctors said he would never walk again but he did. Love that steam train ace.

I really enjoyed this blog you have visited some of my favourite place's in the lakes. There used to be a car museum in Cockermouth and a toy one as well but that was about ten/ twelve years ago.We did Kirkstone pass only once but mind you we did come down Honnister pass backwards that was scary.

27 Sep, 2010

The car museum may have been at Workington?

Thanks to everyone for all your comments, pleased it has brought back pleasant memories for you, now we have got over the journy we are now planning of going back by car and renting a cottage, that way we can explore at our leisure.
Not sure about the car museum Mavis will check it out ;0)

That sounds like a very good plan....travelling by car and staying in a cottage. Enjoy your adventure (whenever that happens, it will be great).

When my two youngest were 10 and 14 we took a camping holiday in between where the train runs from and goes to. We took their two cousins and their mom, all 6 girls all of us in one 6 berth tent with a small cooker, the campsite was brilliant, showers and toilets and that was about it. The girls paired up each day and went to the nearest village either walking there or taking the train and then reversing the journey, it was their first time camping and they have never forgotten it. We could light a bbq in a circle of stones and they cooked marshmallows and sang camping songs. They all still talk about this holiday, their cousins have been all over travelling since but still say that this was the best holiday they have ever had. We played board games at night and walked and toured all the lakes and areas surrounding it during the day. My sister in-law had never driven anywhere apart from to the shop and back but that trip cured her of her nerves, she has never looked back, roads so narrow think she drove around with her eyes closed most of the time. lol.
Your photos brought back such good memories oh to be young again and still be able to go camping with the kids.

Another lovely blog Carole , I remember the ginger bread at Grasmere from one of our visits ,it's delicious .....what a shame the coach tour operators can't get the timing organised better ... a friend of mine decided to try a coach tour trip to London and came home shattered , they didn't even give them time to finish their meal at a service station at one place , she said never again .....

A wonderful trip around the Lake District, PP! I have never been myself but a few years ago we were hoping to take my wife's family up there & rent a cottage for a few days. The following year they didn't come back so we never did get to go. :-(( The following year we went back to Spain & a couple of years after that my father-in-law died. Since returning to the UK 9 years ago we have never had our holidays at the same time so we have still not been there. My wife says when she retires, in a couple of years time, we will go & spent a week up there!

Thanks all pleased you enjoyed it and despite the travelling and time management we will return very soon under our own steam, we are definately hooked!

Yorkshire....I'm glad to have your previous comment cleared up. I read it as a remark against Yorkshire and partner...lol....as I knew they'd travelled together. It now becomes clear....you were asking who the travel company was. Whew!

I just get mixed up sometimes....

28 Sep, 2010

Lol Whistonlass you are not on your own geting mixed up it happens to us all;0)

lovely blog and pics Pansy. That's the trouble with coach trips, they are never ending. The travelling is long, the visits to the places are sometimes too short, and the pic-ups and drop-offs are more often than not horrendous. Glad you enjoyed your trip though, and I do think driving next time is a good idea lol. :o))

29 Sep, 2010

Thanks Linda youve said it all in a nutshell;0)

29 Sep, 2010
