MORE BASKETS

Posted on 18 May, 2008 15 comments

Got the rest of the baskets planted out and rehung. Two of them have:

1 mini ivy

1 Ivy Geranium

5 Trailing lobelia

\

The last basket is a bit on an experiment.

1 Mini Ivy

1 Pelargonium

2 Patio Trailing Mini Tomatoes.

I saw these on TV last year and thought I’d like to try them out. They have been bred especially for patio containers and hanging baskets.

\

My little plot for sweetcorn. OK, I know some folk will say they are planted too close together, but I grew some in this little square last year for the first time and had a good crop. I’ll put a catch crop amongst them , but haven’t decided what as yet.

\

Also been busy planting out from pots to larger containers:

Fuchsia and gerainium, 2 x peppers – Bell Boy, Patio Runner Beans – 3 to a tub.

\

Cherry Toms & Basil into a square pot.

\

\

Aubergine and Ridge Cucumber.

\

Can’t wait to see this years growth. Will have to get the rest of the fuchsias out.

Checked out the carrots under the fleece ….. they are looking good. I didn’t have any problems with carrot fly last year, but that was the first year and the reason why I have put a fleece wigwam over them

Your plants are strong and healthy. Hope they taste as good as they look. I've found some large tubs today that had plants in them brought from my old garden, but now in the ground, so I can plant lots of veges in them. My potatoes are coming on nicely chitted, so I'll plant them soon. I'm also trying several herbs this year, and outdoor tomato which I've never done before. Hope I can reach your standard.

My standard??? Blimey Only had a garden for 3 - 4 years! Just try it out and go for it. Surprising what'll happen, though I am a bit upset that me broad beans and spring onions haven't done so well this year.

Will have to just put more in and hope for the best

It's always surprising, as you said. Better luck with the beans and spr. onions this time. I've had a garden for over 30 years and I'd taken over my father's garden before that. It's just that I've never grown vegetables in containers, only in the ground. It's always good to try something new.

Hi Blodyn

Well, it's a case of neccesity growing in containers - 4" below the surface is a thick layer of roadstone and I just haven't got the strength to dig it all out - so _ containers and grow just about everything in them, though i do have a little that has been dug up

Hi there,
It doesn't sound as if you have much choice other than to grow things in containers. I'm doing it this year because the garden is slowly being covered over in top soil. Half of it is done, and now full of shrubs and perenials. The other half will be done in the next few weeks so it's no good planting anything there.
But I think I'll still carry on growing vegetables in containers in the future. I can have them by the back door so it'll be easier to get at them.

I don't think I could cope with a 'proper' veg plat or an allotment, as much as I'd like to, but containers are a very good alternative. They don't take so much energy to to look after and as long as I can lift them on to a bench or table, I can cope. I dread to think what will happen when I can't. Guess I will go completely around the bend

i only have a very small veg patch, didnt think i would get so addicted to growing them otherwise i would have dug out a bigger patch, but i am also growing some in containers too. hopefully in a few weeks we will have our own fresh fruit and veg

I know what you mean about going round the bend. It's the garden that keeps me sane in times of stress. Even if I don't do anything I sometimes just go to sit there and just look at the plants. It takes my mind off things.

From Vancouver BC Canada
Hi Everybody, I guess it is just about your bed time now but I am heading back out for a bit, Boy, it is HOT.. Just put my hanging baskets out yesterday. Cucumbers, training toms , basil etc. We are expecting rain again tomorrow and we have had such a cold spring.
When I moved into this house I had raised beds built, one of the smartest things I have done in my life. So much easier when you get into the golden years.
As am new at this blogging stuff ( this is my first effort ) it will take me a while to get my pictures sorted out.
It will be nice to hear from you - ( LOL ) that also means LOTS OF (Gardening) LOVE

Hi Irish: I am still not sure what I am doing or which comment I am responding to. As mentioned this is my first attempt at using a blog. I have joined but not sure how to respond to a particular comment as some of them don't have a comment area. I guess I will figure it out somehow. Anyway thank you for responding. It is now 6am on Monday morning ( a holiday here "Victoria Day" )
It is pretty overcast and will probably rain this afternoon so will get the rest of my veggies out of the greenhouse and into the ground before it starts.

Hi Blooms

It's all pretty loose on here. Not to many formalities and you look as if you are doing fine, though, like most new things in life, it takes a bit of getting used to, but we'll all help you, and any other newbies, out.

If you aren't sure, just holler or send someone a Private Message

Thanks Ken: Just finished splitting up my rhubarb, lovage and Egyptian onions, got my butternut squash, zucchini and patty pans planted. Found a couple of heavy wire baskets ( about 12 x 18 x 10 ) so will line them with plastic and start some beets and baby carrots, hope I am not too late - worth a try anyway. I wonder if you have had any luck overwintering Tibouchina? I have left it out covered, brought it in, left it in a cool place, put in the greenhouse ( which is not heated - I have built propogations trays as it is less costly ) but they just don't seem to come through - any suggestions.

Must say I haven't come across Tibouchina before, but I don't grow too many flowers. Mainly veg and salad. I do intend to start growing mre fruit, but that all depends upon how fit I can keep.

I only have a small plastic covered greenhouse, so it never gets any heat. Talking of which. The summer is just about upon us, so the last of the frosts have gone - or so they say. The radio tells us that there could be a sharp ground frost tonight, so I will put my tray of fuchsias under cover. The rest will have to fend for themselve and I will keep my fingers crossed.

Hallo Blooms - welcome to GOY. We don't have rules and regs, we just chat about gardening and sometimes other topics too, if they come up -you can ask questions on the questions page, and do try to add a photo if possible as it really helps. Post some photos of your garden and plants on your own page - it's great to see what other people are growing! Hope you enjoy the site! By the way, what are 'patty pans' please?
