CATCH UP TIME
CATCH UP TIME

Hi Folks.
Seems ages since I wrote up, well it has really, but with feeling a bit crook and busy out in the garden, I’ve been too tired to do much, but anyway, here goes.
The camera nest box I installed, has sill not had any lodgers, but I had a family of coal tits in one of my other boxes, and a robin family in another.
I couldn’t manage to take any photos of the robins, but, with the help of my brother-in-law, managed to take some of the coal tits.
I’ve been overrun with salad leaves grown, one plant to a pot, on the window sills. Very nice in a salad sandwich. I’ve also started on my radishes, but they don’t seem to have swollen as much as commercially grown varieties. Guess I’m not watering them enough. I’m also getting good crops of Charlotte potatoes, grown in my large tubs. I’ve emptied one tub and replanted with beetroot I have grown from plugs …... just trying this method out.
I wonder if any others of you have had a bad year with spring onions and beans? Not many grown at all thins year, but the last lost of broad beans I planted, I soaked for 48 hours before sowing in pots. I was surprised to see they had chitted in that time, but don’t look too bad and have been planted out amongst the sweetcorn and look good.
I’ve had my first Tumbler tomatoes and the plants in the hanging baskets are coming on. However, the Gardeners delight and Shirley don’t seem to be doing too well, despite a weekly feed.
I’ve also had the first serving of Marshmello Strawberries and they were very tasty. I notice that there are enough ready for my tea tonight.
I have decided that, as I am not as mobile as I was a year or so ago, that I will not be planting anything in the dug areas that I have at present, once the garlic is up. I have dug up one variety, Pink Lady, but not too impressed. They are a bit on the small side, but that may be because of bad drainage. Iwill leave the other standard Garlic, White Pearl, in for a little longer and give them a soaking. The stems are turning white, so must be nearly ready. The Elephant Garlic are still mainly green, though I had one left over on planting and put that in a large pot on it’s own.
Turned out to be small, but smells OK The Pink Lady are all tied up and hanging in a net, out of the sunlight, and I will keep an eye on them.
As for the rest of the garden, all the containers and hanging baskets are looking good
BROOM
This Broom is the biggest it had ever been and seems to have taken over part of the garden, but brightens up what is basically a dark corner, north facing
part of the garden.
PATIO ROSES
Right. That’s all for now, Folks! Got to get some beans ot of the freezer that I grew last year and scrape some tates that O fot out of the garden, that’s going to go with the smoked haddock in garlic butter sauce and fresh parsley,
also from my herb corner. What could be better?????

Usually im only in to plants etc. But this year i decided to grow some tomatoes, i grew from seed, put them in pots & they where doing really well till last weekend when we had 73miles an hour winds, it blew them down to the bottom of the garden, Mikec told me they should be ok, they dont look as well as they did, but they are still alive,so will wait & see. Its not put me of as i also grew some salad leaves & they are fine, & taste ok, so next year i've decided to do some more tomatoes & salad leaves & wait for it i'm going to have a go at strewberries aswell.

I think the weather conditions have got a lot to answer for our woes. My first broad beans were scorched in the early heat wave, then the cold hit them. Now I don't know whether it's too much rain or too much sun or not enough of either.

Welcome back... interesting to see how far on your plants are...mine are way behind! Must be the north/south divide! We saw a colatit in the garden this morning, a bit of a rarity for us, along with a woodpecker , even more of a rarity!

Sorry to hear that you're still not feeling so good, Ken. Just amble a bit in the garden and don't try to do too much at once. Hard but necessary. Good to have your own produce to eat!!!

It's an ongoing thing that goes with age, Spritz, but i try to manage a check up of my 9M x 6M estate

Good to have you back, and dinner sounds delicious - my garlic should be ready to harvest soon too. It's the first time I've grown it and I'm really looking forward to trying it.

Thanks, Peter.
This isn't the first time I have grown it, but the first time I have grown named varieties. Just hope there will be some good ones, so that I can keep some back for next year.

I've not had a good year with beans either Ken. The first lot never came up at all. The second lot are very slow and only about 18 inches high now. My neighbour across the way has much better ones. I think I'll give them a feed if this rain will ever stop.
My potatoes in tubs are doing well but my peas carrots and radishes are hopeless.
Like you I don't do any digging either because if I do I can't move then for about a week. I like your patio roses. They're good for growing in tubs.
