Under my Cow Watering Lane photo, I've just quoted from my RHS book the types of Erica which tolerate a slightly alkaline (limy) soil. So, Reflection, I guess it depends which plants you've chosen.

Michaella, please tell us which compost you used for yours.
It's a very pretty display. Thanks. :o)

Hello Michaella....

I do like the arrangement you have planted up in your winter troughs.... yes, its that time of year when bedding plants are over and we have to turn our attention to something that will brighten up our gardens through the winter months. Its great that you have the width in your window cill to displace them so nicely too.

I’ve just planted us some heathers, but then I’ve just spotted the comment left by Terratoonie about choosing the correct compost for heathers, I guess it should be an acid based soil and I used John Innes No 3. Hmmm! I must attend to that..... I’m pleased I spotted it. Have a great weekend the weather looks set to be good. Marion

All that foliage in the background looks great. Is this a tree or a bush?

Valandra ~
Here's the other photo.
The variegated ivy and a heather would be a good choice for you.
Make sure you choose the correct compost for your heather.
I hope this helps.

Valandra ~ this photo and the next one, of stone window boxes are the ones I'm suggesting you look at for winter planting.
Heathers and ivy, perhaps.

The containers are very attractive. If the plants outgrow them perhaps you can find other plants that fit.
