Raking the Leaves
Posted on 7 Nov, 2008 12 comments
It is a very wet morning out there this morning. The weather man said that all of this dull and wetness will be over before lunch time. I cannot wait, as I would like to go out there and rake the leaves off the lawn, I am also excited this autumn, I am going to bag my leaves and hope for lovely beautiful compost in a year’s time.

Thank you Hywel, will do! I have never tried it before. But felt encouraged when watching Gardeners' World.

I do, too, but we have SOOO many leaves that most of them end up being thrown behind the tall shrubs in a corner of the garden, after a layer or two in the compost bin. There are still lots left to fall, as well!
Don't forget to wet the leaves if they're dry, Michaella - although if it's raining where you are, you certainly won't have to! LOL.

Thank you, you are right, it is wet out there, I will not have to wet the leaves, but will make holes in bags. Have a good day!

We can actually see some sunshine at the moment! Amazing! It did rain in the night, though and I can see clouds appearing - again. I hope you get the leaves raked up without your raincoat and umbrella, Michaella!

Does it not take 2 years to compost leaves fully.

I have collected the leaves for a number of years now. In a compost bin they rotted down beautifully and I just took the bottom section out for garden use. Then the rats moved in and I got rid of the bin. Now I just pack the leaves into plastic bags. Tried to do in cheaply last year and used the charity bags that I am always getting through the letterbox. Unfortunately they rotted and fell apart before the winter was over so I had to re-bag. You need to pierce a few holes in the bag too. It's well worth the effort though.

Clarice, you are more than welcome to come and rake up some of mine and take them home with you! I have had another session this afternoon and there are STILL loads more. The Ash trees have now started to lose their leaves... SIGH.
Interesting that the charity bags rotted - are they actually bio-degradable, do you think, Gee?

I've always made leaf compost Michaella. It's good stuff. Make sure you put some holes in the bags for air to get in.
