Inside the Secret Garden

With all the rain we have had, I have decided to take the ‘Kiftsgate’ rambling rose down including the pergola which supported her. I know I have said that I was going to wait till November time, but I have done this before, moved a lot of plants around when it suited me, they have survived, so have taken the chance with ‘Kiftsgate’. Now that the center of the secret garden is open and airy, I shall put my new bench and table on the brick circle after I have swept the patio and tidied up. I think it was a mistake planting her there in the first place, hope she will pickup and go for it all over again. Trust she will..

As she was about 3 weeks ago

Totally taken over the Red Robin

She was on a pergola on this circle patio

This patio is now quite bright..the paths can be seen clearly now.

The view from behind looking towards the pond

This is ‘Kiftsgate’ now..I have cut her to this height, giving her a chance for new growth to sprout somewhere. Got to dig her up later this evening… get her to her new home before the rain stops, weatherman said the weather is going to get drier now. :))

The mighty roots of ‘Kiftsgate’ I managed to lift her with a lot of soil and roots, it got too dark after that, will plant her tomorrow.

This is where the new bench now sits.

Shall add more pictures of the tidied up area tomorrow.
It has been nice and sunny.. got a lot done today, it took 2 wheelie bins full to get rid of the bits from Kiftsgate, just as well the recycling center is not so far away.

Garden looks like a rough diamond at the moment, have not been able to garden properly for 3 months due to rain everyday :((( got a lot to catch on.:(((

We had floods at the bottom of the garden this evening, as soon as the rain stopped I went out to dig 5 roses, they came out within minutes of digging… complete with roots, no way that would have happened if I waited till the autumn..soil would have been too dry.

Kiftsgate has now been planted against this tree

This is the height, she now has a long way to climb, hope she will..

This area has now been tidied up.

I have planted bamboos where ‘Kiftsgate’ was

A long line of ‘Red Robins’ and other shrubs behind the patio giving the area seclusion.

Good luck with moving her. I would imagine such a vigorous plant will have impressive roots! I don't envy you that job, but I'm sure she will do it all again. It's a mad grower, that one.

Hi Ojibway93, thank you, the first 2 pictures show her as she was, the rest of the pictures show she is not there anymore, I took her down day before yesterday, then it rained all yesterday, could not clear her up, no rain today all cleared now, the hardest bit I guess..is to dig her up. Shall do that before dark, watch this space! :)))

Thank you Sandra, shall put a picture of the pond...

Thank you Terratoonie.:))

Hi Jane21..she had finished flowering...:)

Having light in the area you have cleard will make a huge difference to the other plants. We have just cut a honeysuckle right back and in fact I quite like the space without it and already some roses and hardy geraniums are doing better.

You certainly have a way with your garden plants and roses Michaella I am sure this one will be just as big a success as all the rest. Apparently the Jet Stream is moving further northwards so that is a good sign for some better weather moving in for us all. YAY :O) Good luck with the big dig and move! B x

I should think the rose will settle in well with all the moisture in the soil now. I'm glad your patio is brighter now, and the bench looks lovely there :o)

Hope Kiftsgate is happy in her new home, she looks a very strong and healthy rose so sure she will do well,. Your new seat looks great on your circle and makes a lovely view through the archway. A job well done very artistic;))

A really interesting blog Michaela. Moving a big hunk of a rose like your Kiftsgate is a really satisfying project for you. I think I have seen this rose at Hyde Hall, and it can go places. I took advantage of all the rain to scale down our Carpentaria after it had flowered. There were a lot of strong new shoots growing in the middle, so I thought the twisted older bits could go and let the young ones take over. I now have a perfect view of next doors washing. I had to seize the moment, as Essex is usually so dry

They are lovely pictures Michaella. It's a real pain not being able to get out there at this time of year especially as everything's growing twice as much as usual with all the rain. Lets hope they are right about the dry spell coming soon. At least the Rose will get a chance to settle in before the ground dries out. Did you buy the table with the bench hun?

18 Jul, 2012

Oh noooo..the neighbour's washing :((((

Hi Annella, I bought the table a few years ago. :)))

Great job M. I hope she romps away in her new home for you. It's been pouring down all day here too. I don't think I shall add any more roses to my garden...too miserable. Sigh...oh well....let's hope the weathermen are right, although it means more wet for us I fear, but perhaps not, perhaps it will only rain in the North. :)

Many thanks Karen! :))) We had heavy rain this afternoon, now the sun is out, can't wait to get out there and move a further 3 roses. :)))

We had sun for an hour but it's thundering now...20.19

18 Jul, 2012

It rumbelled here for a while this afternoon but the sun was shining and no rain fell. Fingers crossed the weekend is supposed to be much better weather wise. :O))))))))))))))))))

18 Jul, 2012

The sun came and stayed from 5 pm onwards, went out to dig some more roses, according to me it is the best time to move plants which may be in the wrong place, the soil was so wet, the roots came out in 2 goes, would never have been able to do that even in the autumn. I feel they will have a better chance to grow again whilst the soil is moist and warm.

A job well done M, I am sure Kiftsgate will be fine, ours has survived being stuck behind a shed for over 10 years, and totally neglected, moved the shed this year and she is romping away up the neighbours silver birch lol it will let in a lot more light to your garden, love the new bench very classy!!

Many thanks Dottydaisy2, I really hope she will, she is in the ideal place where she is now:)))
