Autumn time

Autumn time

Posted on 6 Mar, 2009 15 comments

I can feel it in the air
autumn’s everywhere
showing colours, yellows and reds.
Leaves are dropping on the beds.
A week of dry
don’t ask me why
put patches on the lawn
now are paling to a fawn.
Heliconia’s dehydrated
their flowers a bit deflated.
Other signs are at the back
when I follow down the track
and come to the fruit scene.
Some orange on the mandarine;
they’ll ripen in autumn time
and so does the lime.
We were just sprinkling again
when this morning, came the rain.
It’s pelting on the iron roof
and you can see the water move
dripping off the leaves and stems
and along the garden bed hems.
The wind appears in bits and fits
shaking branches out of their wits.
It was sombre late afternoon
getting chilly far too soon.
A real autumn taste hung around
birds were fleeing, home abound.
I switched off the ceiling fan,
went on the veranda with my man.
We sat there having a drink
dogs were at my feet, I think,
content with the cool change
coming from the mountain range.
Wet leaves are shining in the light
providing us with a fresh sight.
My garden gives a sigh of relief
and I am happy, I believe.

Strange to think of autumn now. But you probably find it strange to think of spring in March Marguerite.

Lovely poem Marguerite, but SHUT UP!! We're all looking to the opening up of Spring and Summer. Autumn's so far off as to be impossible! :o))

Thank you all for your kind comments and reading my poem. I can tell you, our autumn here in the tropics means the dry and sunny weather, so sure, something lovely to look forward too. But today it's been pouring again, and lucky the cyclone didn't get us and is moving further South. Little great Barrier Reef islands people and tourists have been evacuated ad they now are in the path of possible destruction of this severe tropical cyclone called Hamish. So o'night we had 2.5 inches of rain ( 64 mm ) and a little bit of wind. But I love that and listening to the rain pelting on the iron roof and the heliconia's in front of our bedroom window were swaying and flapping, great sound. Even the frogs were so happy. So yes, when I say autumn, I wear a smile from ear to ear!

Celebrate the season you're in, I say...not all of us live with 4 seasons or in the same hemisphere...I enjoy seeing/reading about what's going on in other parts of the world..always amazes me how far reaching the internet is, how global GoY is. Your poem is beautiful Marguerite, a touch of sadness at the end or maybe not! =)

Thanks again for your comments. Raquel I had to think of a rhyming word, lol. No sadness.

Wonderful writing Marguerite. I could feel autumn all the way through. To me it feels like dusk, when folks are heading into their houses and finishing things up. Birds quieting down. I'm slow on catching up with blogs, but I'm sure glad I caught this one. I'm still practically in winter so everything is a joy to hear about. :-)
