Carica papaya
Carica papaya

In the garden I can see
my lovely paw paw tree.
Bunches yellow/white
flowers nice and bright;
fragrance as well,
my nose can tell.
Bees are swarming
it’s quite alarming.
Fruit is orange,oval or round
some had fallen on the ground.
I choose one, then twist
take it home and insist
we’ll have it for lunch.
Now to the crunch:
when you cut the fruit,
it will smell so good.
Black seeds inside
they can glide
on the white pith
scoop them out with
a scrape of a spoon:
you will see soon
the orange flesh
nice and fresh.
Delicious with lime
that’s how I eat mine.
The tree has some branches
and there will be chances
these will bear fruit too
without much ado.
Water and sun,
the tree will run,
reach for the sky
I don’t know why.
It bears fruit all year
without any fear.
Bottom leaves dry
then they will die
and leave a nice marking
on top of the barking.
Tree from my childhood
you have such nice food.

Thank you for reading my poem. Yes, it is me there in my parents garden with the rabbit called Jaapie. I am sitting under a paw paw tree that's why I posted it. I did have a happy childhood in the tropics and yes, sometimes I wished I was back there again, even though I do live in the tropics.
I did go back there a couple of times, but things are not the same, they never are, are they?

Great blog Marguerite. I've never had paw paw either. From your description it sounds delicious.
Great to see the photo of you in your parents garden but you're right.....things are never the same as we remember....you can never go back. :o(

I shall have to look for paw paw next time I go shopping in the supermarket. Don't think I have ever seen one. Sounds yummy - and your poem is very clever.

Gilli, paw paws on their own are rather bland, sweetish, but dull, if you know what I mean. It's in combination with lime juice, banana and/or mango that it becomes delicious.
We get so many from our two trees, we have them every day for fruit salad and Ithen add other fruit to it to make a colourful display. I love eating colours, lol. Hubby scrapes out the pulp of the yellow passionfruits, of which we have many growing now on the vine and spreads it over his fruitsalad. Maybe I'll take a picture of it. I don't like passionfruit, but it smells devine.
Spritzhenry, I have a whole collection of my old pictures, which I scanned in ages ago, as the originals gradually deteriorate. it was 1949 there, so it's pretty old. Thank you all for your kind comments.

Oh, thanks for the recipe, Marguerite! I find them bland, so next time I'll know what to do!
