A thief!

A thief!

Tonight I have been looking at some wonderful pictures here from our members. I have learned a few things for which I am thankful. I hope I remember them, haha. But also when I looked at some strawberry plants I suddenly remembered mine. This is a long time ago…..in the 70ties. The setting: our farm.
Those days I was all into having a vegie garden. My husband suggested some strawberry plants. So we bought some from the strawberry farm, miles away. These were the smaller variety, very sweet smell and taste. We got black plastic and placed it over the mounds we shovelled up. Dug a little hole in the spots were the plants had to go. All looked wonderful and soon enough the hot summer’s sun ripened them by the douzens. They were delicious. Because we have kangaroos and rabbits who especially in the summer when the grass is dry, love anything green, we had erected a little fence around the vegie garden with special rabbit netting. I had a little gate, through which I could go in and outof the vegie patch. Everything was thriving. Or so I thought. Suddenly I noticed some half nibbled strawberries. And there were not as many as before. I got curious. I didn’t see any slugs, besides they bite differently and I had charcoal all around the perimiters of the patch. Slugs hate that they told me. ( The slugs did of course ). I couldn’t understand it, the fence was in tact. But the next afternoon when I went to pick some strawberries I noticed something inside the fence. It was a bobtail goanna and the stupid thing had gotten stuck in that rabbit netting. He was on his way back, had his head on the outside, but his fat belly could not get through! I had to laugh, because I caught the thief. Then I felt sorry, because I could not free him and I didn’t want to pull or push too hard, or else I might hurt it. Little bugger! So I called my hubby. He came with his wire cutters and very carefully he snapped a couple of those squares in the fence so we could free this bobtail. I took it and put it further in the bush. It ran away. Probably never came back. Serves him right for eating my strawberries. He could have been there all night or day eating away….We fixed the fence and that was that.

Well believe it or not I can't bring myself to kill snails and slugs. I throw them into the field at the back. They probably come straight back in lol, only to get thrown over the hedge again !
Liked your tale Marguerite. Wish I could write like that : )

Oh, dear friends, thank you so much for reading my blog. You have flattering comments; puts a smile upon my face. Lyd, is your name Lydia? My mother's is too. I will post some sunshine pics for your children. I feel sorry for you all that the weather is so miserable, and that whilst it is supposed to be summer there. I am in a happy mood, as the sun is shining today. You wouldn't believe it but it was 13 here last night, but at 8 am you could sit in the sun on the terrace having breakky. I laugh about your slugs Blodyn. Try the charcoal method and see if they come back. Trouble is snails are bisexual and you only need one to mulitply. Perhaps catch them in a bucket and then bring them to the water's edge, or to someone who has ducks or geese. I believe they'll have them for dinner.
Well, thanks again, see what I can come up with tonight.

Another excellent tale. If you keep em coming, I'll keep reading and smiling....

I almost imagine myself living there from your tales, so descriptive, you have a gift... put them in a book and let schoolchildren (and us adults) around the world read them...
