Bargain boxes

Posted on 2 Mar, 2008 10 comments

How’s this for a bargain. Our local garden centre has been having a clear out of all its unsold insect boxes etc. and let us have the remaining ones for just £1 each (a saving of approx. £17 on the more expensive items!) We snapped them up for our woodland walk which has now been re-named Little Larford Bird Sanctuary and Nature Trail. All the boxes have now been installed and labelled so that local school children and adults alike can take an educational walk around the woodland.

Has anyone had any success with insects and other wildlife visiting such boxes?

Here are pics of some of them:

Robin Box:\

Hedghog Nesting Box:\

Frog & Toad House:\

All these plus the necessary butterfly and ladybird attractants and even the bedding material for the nesting boxes! What a bargain eh!

Wow you did well. Such a variety. I wonder how well the hedgehog one works, as I could do with one to help with slugs/snails perhaps :)

I think it possible the Blue Tits might beat the bees to the bee box ?

How come I always buy the wrong magazine - I was looking forward to reading about you. Which issue was it please? I am green with envy at your bargains. My local Garden Centres should copy this philanthropy - bet they don't!

What a shame you bought the wrong magazine Spritz, these glossy mags are expensive too. We're in the March issue of BBC Gardeners' World ( Titchie on the front cover holding a truss of tomatoes.) Also look out for the March issue of Gardens Monthly (chillies on front cover) - there's a good article with nice pics of us in that. However, if you want to wait until April/May (not too sure when it comes out) definitely look out for the May issue of The English Garden. This is fantastic - the photos are absolutely beautiful and we're on the front cover too!

I agree, garden centres should sell off unwanted stock at a much reduced rate, better than putting it in a skip. Mind you it helps if the garden centre owner is also an old friend !!! (sorry didn't tell you that did we !!!)

AHA...all becomes clear! It's not what you know etc. Thanks for the info on magazines. I've got the BBC one and will look for the others. You are costing me a fortune!

Sorry Spritz - same here, we're having to fork out too, buying copies for family and friends! Actually, you'd think we would receive at least one free copy from the magazines we've featured in. Only The English Garden have sent us a copy, the rest we've had to buy ourselves!
