Many thanks for all replies - it is fairly solid clay, so will double dig to start with and then if I am still in one piece after that, shall leave well alone apart from adding compost on top each year. Thanks again.
On question - To dig or not to dig?

Thank goodness that someone else had as bad a year as me. My first season growing vegs. and virtually all a disaster!! Good to know I am not alone and will therefore persevere next year!!

I too had a new greenhouse this year (first time) - I'm blaming the weather for poor results (Scotland!!) during the summer. Toms. took an age to set and flower but are now giving me quite a lot of fruit. Aubergines took one look at the world and decided not to venture forth. Butternut squash a disaster. Peppers the size of peanuts. After such a poor summer, I have not even thought/dared to think about winter planting. I shall be interested to see the response to your question.

Cannot believe the spring colours and how beautiful everything looks already - and how come your greenhouse is packed to bursting. Up here in Scotland, the wind is blowing and there is no way anything could possibly grow in my cold greenhouse just yet. Haven't even sowed anything yet and even the pots. are reluctant to chit properly. Ah well, enjoy it, I suppose spring will eventually come up here.
