I will get back to the Garden

Posted on 27 Sep, 2008 3 comments

Haven’t written much in my blog because I haven’t been doing much in the garden, I’m afraid. Cutting grass and tidying up, mostly, while resolving to do more. It’s a stunning day today, but the garden is beginning to wilt and I’m looking forward to starting a winter clear up soon. I’m always afraid to chop back plants incase I kill them, or leave the garden looking like it’s had one horrific haircut. But it has to be done!

Fear not! My garden is so small that I have to be brutal, or disappear in the resulting jungle. Most plants see hard pruning as a challenge (it seems to me). The horrific haircut syndrome is inevitable at some point, it'll never look perfect all the time.

Try not to give a brutal haircut to spring flowering shrubs or you'll loose all next year's flowers.
I gave a bruital haircut to my friend's camelia earlier this year ( well she did ask me to cut it back for her ). She thought I'd killed it.lol but now it's growing back into a nice shape.
I always try to leave some old growth on the plants though. I think it protects them from frost, and sometimes it looks nice when you've got dew or ground frost on old seed heads etc. I then cut them back in the spring.
I don't like things looking too prim. It doesn't seem natural.
Good luck with your pruning.
Hywel.
