A very "SPECIAL" moonlight night..........

Janey

I knew there would be something magical and mysterious tonight, the moon as it came up was huge and golden, climbing behind the trees, higher into the night sky………..

Behind the clouds it appeared, lighting up the sky with it’s silver light.

Higher it rose, till you could see all the markings and craters…….

Then behind the trees it sailed, now a misty golden orb……….

And there too rising high…….I felt I had seen this before!!

It 's mesmerizing isn't it, mysterious and powerful, I once knew a pale young Lady who enjoyed 'moon bathing' ;-) A couple of mornings ago I took a pic of it, I'll post it.

Great imagination, Janey! I thought you were about to write a "lunatic" poem! ET at the end was great!

As my wife & I were walking home on Monday evening around 7pm we saw the massive globe of the Moon low down on the horizon but looking so big that it looked as if it were about to crash on our world! I wish I'd been able to get a photo of it! But the problem is that it only looks that way to the human eye - it's an optical illusion! The camera sees it the same size on the horizon as higher in the sky.

Lol Balcony! It was really large wasn't it...more like a harvest moon in March! This climate change must be affecting everything....did you read where the 2 recent earthquakes have shifted the earth on it's axis a miniscule amount and will shorten the days by part of a second?

Thats really strange that the camera should see the moon different to us isn't it?
I wonder why that is?
I checked my Dahlias today Balcony......still no little green shoots...:o( Maybe another couple of weeks and they'll be sprouting.........

5 Mar, 2010

Brilliant moon pics Janey and a nice finishing touch :-)) I think the days have been shortened already by at least 3 hours!...or is that just me? :-)

5 Mar, 2010

Thanks Ba... I think you're right....I'm sure they'll be no Spring or Autumn soon...just 8 months winter 4 of summer...:o(

6 Mar, 2010

Ha, ha - love it Janey- gosh you're good at the special effects :o)

6 Mar, 2010

Lol Cg!...:o)

It's something to do with the way the human brain perceives images, I can't remember enough of the explanation at this moment to give you a proper idea of what scientists believe happens in our brains, but I've quoted articles that refer to it on the BeyondSpace forum I belong to. I'll have to do a search & see if I can find one of them & then put a link here so you can read it for yourself.

"It was really large wasn't it...more like a harvest moon in March!"

Harvest? In March? Haven't you got your seasons & months a little mixed up?

7 Mar, 2010

That's interesting Balc.....no Lol!! you're reading it wrong...a harvest moon...in MARCH????

7 Mar, 2010

Why does the camera see only a smaller moon? this would be a really good question for Prof. Philip Stott on 'Home planet' Radio 4 on Thursday afternoons. I listen every week. I've just emailed the question to 'Home Planet so I'll listen on Thursday.

7 Mar, 2010

It is a mystery Heron...it will be interesting to hear the explanation will you post it please? When I took these pics.....it did appear much smaller in relationship to the closer surroundings...then zoomed in X16. Trimmed it then at an extra X8 before putting it on the computer. Do you think it may be that the camera sees it as it is, but we can't distinguish the distance as there is no point behind the moon with which to fix it?

7 Mar, 2010

I dod hear this explained once on radio 4.... but I've forgotten the reason lol:-)

7 Mar, 2010

We'll have to wait for Heron, Ba...interesting though isn't it??...:o)

7 Mar, 2010

Now pay attention Bornagain :-))) It's funny/annoying when you forget things, I know what you mean though, I listen to the weather forecast and then promptly forget. I do remember being told at school to "pay attention"

8 Mar, 2010

Nice pics, nice touch! Only just found this, but I looked at the moon on Saturday morning at 2 a.m. - it was not a quarter moon, but not a half either, somewhere in between, and it was red! But my camera's not up to the task, unfortunately, so I couldn't get a decent picture of it.

8 Mar, 2010

I 've been along to the forum where I post frequently & I eventually found the page that probably gives the best explanation in the simplest of terms.

http://beyondspace.info/forum/index.php?topic=1467.0

I wrote it a few years ago but it will always be relevant as we will always be seeing full moons that look enormous on the horizon but if you were to photograph it at that moment & then a few hours later the Moon would appear to be of identical size in both your photos even though to our eyes they were different sizes! Ah, the mysteries of the human brain!

8 Mar, 2010

Bamboo.....I wonder why that was,.... would it be to do with the atmosphere do you think?
Thanks for the info Balcony.........shall have a look...:o)

9 Mar, 2010

I've no idea - I know in April there's something called the Red Moon, but I dunno what that means - my ignorance on this subject abounds!

9 Mar, 2010

Wouldn't be reflecting off Mars..lol! I find it incredible that we're all part of the solar system though do you....and the Milky Way, is so tiny in the grand scheme of things!!

9 Mar, 2010

Great programme on the Beeb on Sunday evening about the sun and the solar system - really interesting. If only I could remember what I learned...

9 Mar, 2010

Lol Bamboo....join the club!...:o) Yep saw it was on then forgot.......:o)))

9 Mar, 2010

Just watched it Bamboo.....incredible viewing....amazing to learn of the Solar wind...I had heard of it before but didn't know anything about it...looking forward to the next prog....:o)))

9 Mar, 2010

Oh yes, solar wind, that was it, fascinating stuff. Just watched a Horizon on Beeb on cosmology and dark waves - I tell you, dark matter, dark energy, dark waves, all names they've created because they don't know what it is... looks like nothing, but the "nothing" out there seems to have energy - interesting nonetheless.

9 Mar, 2010

Its amazing just how far they can delve into the unknown isn't it? Seeing pics that Voyager sent into space in the 70s, is still relating back...is "out of this world"...Lol. I was waiting for him to explain the sun spots...which looked liked holes...maybe I missed it but it seemed to be that the sunspots were the sun rejuvinating itself....like giving the fire a good old riddle......we still have 8 billion years of heat (when we get it) to enjoy Bamboo......
