Probably a good idea, Hamish!

I've just been looking at a Hemorocallis I've got growing right next to where my leeks were and there seems to be something tunneling inside the leaves - that's worrying....

Ah Lovely Wicker Man! I like him because I see him when I drive down to Cornwall for my holidays every year :-) Actually, I had no idea he was made from withies - thought he was metal - he's lasted well if that's the case.

Well there seems to be an insecticide available to commerical growers, but I wonder how effective it is as I tried spraying mine and it just rolled straight off the leaves. Organic farms will have a major problem on their hands I think....

Hi Hamish, don't know if it's the same problem, but I've just yesterday written a blog on something called 'Leek Moth'. Have a read and see if the symptoms sound familier. :-) (Click on my avatar and then on the right hand green tap - Blogs - and it's the first one).

I also have the same problem this year with my leaks. All papery and half dead with no thickness ocurring at the stems.
I dug a bit of a trench this time in order to have longer stems, and still used the dibber at the bottom of the trench.,I earthed them up,bit by bit and thought I had overdone it,causing this problem. They are quite close to where my blighted tomatoes were growing which I also thought could have been the problem.

I shall be very interested in replies you receive.

I had the same problem last year, but they have flowered beautifully this year. Hmm, can't be more helpful about what I actually did though that was different from last year.

Mine hasn't flowered either (N Derbyshire) Spritzhenry gave me some pruning advice, as I am a bit haphazard, but perhaps its been a bad Hydrangea year? All I know is they like water, and there's certainly been plenty! (mine is bod-standard pink - acid soil)

You wouldn't have pruned it at the wrong time, I know that, Hamish. So - I guess not enough sun down here, too much rain, don't you? Fingers crossed for next year!

Silver Surfer LoL! Good one TT, USA is still Imperial but Canada switched to metric in the 90's..but just like you Hamish Im too old to think in Metric, I cope by knowing a few markers like 10cm =4inches so I am constantly translating...Your garden looks great, love the gravel idea. Did you put anything under the gravel to keep down weeds?

Does it spread alarmingly,
like bindweed,
or can you keep it to one area?
For instance, is it a good idea,
to grow it in a pot?

It's a good point you make, that gardens develop slowly.
I expect your neighbours get a nice view of
your greenery from their upstairs windows.

On TV today, gardeners were commenting that the lawn can often be the part of the garden which takes the most time and effort. Sounds like a good idea for you to have the gravel instead, Hamish.

I wouldn't worry about talking in feet and inches. I think the Americans are still measuring in those. Not sure about Canada? And the silver surfers on this site will just LOVE the imperial measurements. LOL

Thanks for explaining. I understand the photo area a lot better now. And I'll say it again~

Please explain underneath my comment here about how this fits in with the rest of your plot.

You told me in an email, and I reckon other GoY members would be interested.
Thanks, Hamish.

Lots of folk are saying how much they like autumn.
Not for me.
My favourite is springtime, every time.
Beautiful photo.

I like the snowdrops in drifts.
Hamish, do you know about those stones in the foreground ?
Are they anything significant?
It's okay to put the answer under my comment, in case someone else asks you the same question !

Hi Hamish, no i don't think you are the first, my daffs are still green however, but then here in Essex, we have'nt really had winter yet! i can count on one hand the amount of ground frost's we have had since November. we seem to have had a very long autumn, so i still have perennials from last summer going, crocus in flower, elephants ears in flower. my daffs are threating to flower but no colour showing yet. i also have tulips coming up - and the snow drops have only just started to pop up. the tulips are further along than the snow drops! so it seems to be all round the wrong way for us!

On blog - spring ??
