Evening falls over the garden, and the shadows begin to take over.....Blog 21.October 21st 2008.

In Blog 20 we mentioned that the Stumpery is lit at night, so here are several photographs that were taken this evening as night -time began to fall over the garden…......the garden becomes a magical kingdom at night…

This is a timed exposure showing part of the stumpery at night time.
The dramatic shadows cast wonderful shapes over the area surrounding the pond.
The lighting is a mixture of outdoor low voltage Halogen spotlights, and powerful Halogen floodlights.
The colours and shapes of the ferns and other shade – loving plants are accentuated by the lighting.
Below is a photograph of the front area of the new stumpery showing the two planted hollow tree stumps and the large twisted root system to the right.

Thanks for these added photos - lovely! I suppose it's a bit too chilly to sit outside at the moment, though!

Lovely, what lights are you using, and what camera, sorry dont mean to be rude, you take such beautiful pictures.

Hi Dotty daisy -The photos were taken on a Panasonic 10 million pixel camera and a Sony 5 million pixel Cybershot camera. We use low voltage Halogen spotlights and floodlights.
Hi Spritz. We have been braving the cold this evening taking all these special photos. They have taken longer than normal hence the timed exposures, and you have to keep very still.
Normally we would use a tripod to keep the camera steady to prevent the photos becoming blurred.

Wonderful - reminds me of your trip to Bavaria and those glorious grottos. Not the first night pictures Ajay - just the first good ones!
Dotty - Grenville uses the national grid to light his garden and trapped camera crews from all the publicity take the pictures. He and Alan wont let them out till totally satisfied with the results !
Ps thank you for the detailed photos Grenville - very useful he he .

Bonkers -Have you heard the pitiful pleas from the trapped camera persons crying 'Let us out!'
Secret night surveillance cameras have also been installed to detect any of Bonkers spying squirrels or other intrusion attemps.
'M' is on red alert!

Aye but not sympathy for them .Probably enjoyed your hospitality so much that could do with losing a few pounds before release.

Great photos! What a good idea taking pics at night, but the stumps really look fairytale like. Well done!

Beautiful, Grenville.
Yours must be among the last curtains to be pulled each evening, it must be wonderful to sit indoors in the warm and look out of the window onto your magical garden. I love to do the same although my garden lights are the lowly solar-powered ones. My youngsters think I am mad but I find it a very therapeutic way to end the day.

Lovely blog, Grenville, showing how to add yet another dimension to the garden. Many thanks for putting this in the "spotlight", so to speak. Best Wishes!

That's funny.
I nearly commented on your previous blog that I would like to see more evening photos, but thought you might be tired after yesterday's hard work !
Very atmospheric and attractive. :o)
