My ‘Chumble of cheloneons’ are now all back together again. Strangely enough, the two girls came out of hibernation at roughly the same time last year, although as they went down much later, the hibernation period was shorter!. They have had their first bath and have begun to eat. It’s always a worrying time until they start to eat and become active again.

*I have enjoyed the snow we have had recently (sorry, all those that have had too much and those who don’t like it anyway) but now I am looking forward to spring and being able to put the trio out into the garden. They are not house-trained and it is quite hard work keeping them clean and fresh. They have a ‘hot spot’ for basking under but like to wander around too. If a door is left open they will head for it immediately and quickly! They are also very stubborn and will try to walk through objects rather than round them. If it doesn’t move easily they will barge it repeatedly and often I hear the thumping as they persist in their efforts to move the radiator, the computer desk, etc! Life is never boring here – thank goodness :)

Hope you are all basking under your own little hot spots while this cold weather continues!*

You are lucky to have tortoises - they're rare pets these days. You obviously look after them really well. :-)))

We had a pair when the children were small Gee , gosh do they move quickly , we never did see them again after the children left the gate open one day ..... :o)

We were also given a large one which it was claimed to be approx. 50yrs.old by a friend of my fathers we felt sorry for it on it's own so found someone who had an old one and let them have it , they settled down for the winter together ........

Apologies to those GoYers to commented on this blog which was duplicated x 3!! I did read and appreciate your comments before I deleted the extra ones :)

The old idea was that tortoises should hibernate from early October through to spring regardless of weather conditions, Lincslass. Now it is recommended that a hibernation period of 8-10 weeks is long enough for these very vulnerable little animals so I do bring my two larger ones inside to make sure they don't lose too much weight or if the weather is freezing. The little one stays indoors all winter. The long hibernation was one cause of so many tortoise deaths in the early days. Hywel, they didn't wake up until I bought them indoors and they warmed up :)

I do hope spring comes early, Milky!
