Wet, Wet, Wet....

No – not the pop group but my garden. After days of heavy rain and a night of endless torrential rain my garden this morning looked like this:

This is my back garden. I just hope my poor little Rowan tree will survive this. The tortoises, hibernating in the shed, are up high well out of the water but as its so damp inside I may have to bring them indoors. My mower may not work again! I did paddle down the garden with water coming into my wellies and lifted it up a little so I will hope for the best. Not much else I can do.

This is my pathway to the front door and into the back garden. The water was running like a little brook. I rang our local council to ask for sandbags as the water rose quickly coming within a foot or two of the walls of my home. I was amazed to be greeted with a recording saying ‘There have been no flood warnings so if you require sandbags go to any DIY store’!! Eventually I did manage to get them to send some out to me so I now have some protection but it was added stress I did not need!

The water was too deep for me to venture along the path to take a photo of the front garden so I took this one through my dining room window.

My son in law, just off of night work, came round to help me and carried Chloe through the water to some dry land so she could do her ‘business’. She hates water, bless her and was glad to be back indoors, dried and warm.

The water is not from a river or any water course but just surface water that the culverts and drains are inadequate to cope with. Many fields around the village are under water and several homes are not as lucky as me and have been flooded inside. Another problem was being unable to flush the ‘loo’ as the sewers were effected too :(

Tonight the water has receded and tomorrow the forecast says it will be dry so I will end on a more optimistic note with this little pansy who has sat outside the back door smiling at me all day :)

Hoping you are all dry and warm.

I do sympathise - we are getting used to this sort of thing on a regular basis but I guess its pretty unusual in Kent!.

We have had rain every day throughout November and we have a spring which has broken through in our back garden. Still trying to get hold of some sandbags for our front garden. Today was the first time I have been acle to get outside for about 2 weeks.

I hope everything drains away soon!

We had this in our village this morning too - just too much rain. My garden does not look as bad as yours though! We had really bad floods here 9 years ago and I do sympathize.

Oh Gee what a nightmare! I hope it dries out quickly. I am on the west coast of Scotland where it NEVER stops raining but have not had to cope with anything like that. On the positive side, it's not in your house (no thanks to your local council).

Oh Gee , that is awful , poor you , it dosn't look as if you can get out at all , I hadn't heard that it was that bad in Kent .....
I hope for your sake that it dries up quickly , the councils attitude is disgusting , surely they can what the position is ..
You take care and keep warm ...keep in touch and let us know , we may have to send you food parcels !!!

Hope you manage to get some sandbags, Rachelsmum, they certainly have made me feel a bit more secure.

Trouble with our local council is that it is town based, Skillen, and the villages seem to be forgotten while the town gets another face lift costing millions.

Hope your garden is looking better tonight too, Drc, it's horrible to see costly and cared for plants under water. I am worried about my new little rowan tree that I only planted about 10 days ago :(

Hi Amy, your idea of food parcels certainly cheered me up! I hope to get out tomorrow as have a row of stepping stones along my path through the remaining water. As long as I don't wobble I should be OK :)

Oh dear :-(
I 'am' sorry Gee, i hope that the rains stay away now, for a while, so things can get back to normality for you.

1 Dec, 2009

So sorry to see your beautiful garden under water and hope your plants all survive, especially your newly planted Rowan. I'm glad that you finally got your sandbags. I hope the weather changes for you and you soon dry out.

I'm sorry to hear about your flood. It must have been worrying and frightening for you. I hope it's better today. I'm not surprised about the response from your council. If they're anything like ours they're rubbish. I'm glad the tortoises are safe, and Chloe is happy sleeping on that comfy chair :o)

Oh dear Gee, what a terrible worry for you. Hope the rain keeps off and gives it a chance to dry off.

1 Dec, 2009

Aw Gee that is really upsetting. What a nasty council. After all they are the ones you are paying your council tax to for the drainage. It is often some little tiny bit of a trickle that gets out of hand, that should be piped instead of being allowed to swell in heavy persistent rain. It seems that everywhere ,in future, will get flooded, the way things are going. I see you are a blue pot and chimney person like me.

1 Dec, 2009

So sorry to see all this water, Gee....
Poor little Chloe... she has short legs...not designed for these floods !

I hope your tortoises manage to stay high and dry..
Good idea to check if their boxes would be better indoors away from the damp.

Let's hope the gardens and wildlife in your area manage to recover quickly. xxx

This blog has inspired me to ask Peter and Ajay to create a new GoYpedia page for me to edit entitled "Flood Damage" and yours is the first entry ! If any other members are able nominate flood photos, I'm ready to include them on that category. Thanks...

Gee - that's dreadful! I really feel for you. Your council is a disgrace! You're not even too far from the County town are you?

Glad you have relatives to help. :-) Let us know how you get on.

1 Dec, 2009

Oh my goodness - it is typical of councils - ours is the same - I live about 200yrds from a river and the slightest downpour and the river rises to the top within minutes but the council are the same they dont issue sandbags but if you buy them from a diy store as soon as the go outside and get wet they are no good later - not that you can reuse them!! My sympathies with you.

1 Dec, 2009

Sorry Gee fancy the council being arkward, but lets hope the water soon goes down, my thoughts are with you.

Thank you all for your support - things are much better today, all the water has drained away but more rain forecast overnight and until the weekend. I am so grateful to my lovely son in law and his friend who built the brick wall and erected my new fence. The water reached to nearly the top of the wall but the fence was still out of the water so that was a bonus. The ditch is still high (it was completely dry a couple of weeks ago!) but was not 'running' this morning so I think that is a good sign :)

I've been out and talked to my rowan tree today so hope it does its best to hang in there and suvive! That flower bed is a little raised so hopefully it will be OK.

Well Gee its a blessing the water has gone. I thought there might be a bit of a ditch involved. Most of the ones round our way were dealt with after a drastic flood from one cloudburst. They made a flood pond off the River Rom and piped several little innocent seeming ditches too. A lot of work but people were very annoyed to be flooded out after one downpour.

firstly i dont know why i clicked "like" cause i feel so sorry for what you are going through, we get quite alot of flooding if its really really bad weather but nothing like this Gee, isnt it about time they did something with the drainage where you live, its ridiculaous that you have to cope with this every time its heavy rainfall, glad you eventually got the sandbags, hope it goes soon :o) x

1 Dec, 2009

How distressing for you Gee.Glad the flood has receeded today and hoping you new rowan tree survives.

1 Dec, 2009

Oh Gee my hheart goes out to you, all that water in your lovely garden and poor Chloe having to be carried out (she looks nice and comfy on your sofa] Hope the water soon subsides and it hasnt caused too much damage.

1 Dec, 2009

I know why I clicked "like" Sandra. It was because it was a good blog. It certainly wasn't because of the stress that the flooding caused. I'm so glad that the water is receeding Gee. I just hope that the rain which is forecast, either doesn't materialise or is very light.

1 Dec, 2009

yes it was because it was a good blog but i felt bad because of the floods toto, so felt a mixed feeling when i clicked :o))

1 Dec, 2009

I do understand Sandra as I too deliberated as to whether to click "like" as well.

1 Dec, 2009

Gave a sigh of relief when I reached the final lines of your blog - I do hope you 'dry up' quickly.

1 Dec, 2009

I sometimes click "like" on a photo or blog as a gesture of support and encouragement. :o)

1 Dec, 2009

yes think thats it to Terra,;o)

1 Dec, 2009

I am really grateful for all the support and words of encouragement. I feel much more relaxed today. I understand exactly what you mean, Sanbaz . I have just done the same with SK, clicking on her blog saying she was unwell. I felt guilty afterwards but just wanted to give support.

No rain here yet so hoping when it does come it will be light :)

1 Dec, 2009

thanx Gee glad you know what i mean :o)) glad you feel more relaxed today and hope the rain keeps off for you :o))

1 Dec, 2009

I was very vexed for you, Gee, reading this, and hope that the water has begun to recede, despite more rain. I really hope that everything out there makes it through.

2 Dec, 2009

Thanks, David, the water has gone but the ground is very boggy. It is still raining but everything seems OK as its not really heavy. The sandbags are still in situ so that makes me feel safer :)

2 Dec, 2009

Pleased it has receded Gee, fingers crossed for no more of the heavy stuff. x

Let us know if you need any plant replacements Gee , if not now in the spring , we will see what we have ... :o)

2 Dec, 2009

thats goes for us all im sure amy, i will add something if needed Gee ;o))

2 Dec, 2009

That is so kind of you, Amy and Sanbaz. I have been down to the greenhouse today and found some seeds growing that members had sent me earlier in the year and that I sowed a few weeks back. The water went down quite quickly so I am hoping all will be well but it's nice to know you are there with backup. GoY is such a lovely community, thank you, thank you :)

You are welcome :o))

2 Dec, 2009

Oh my lord! I clicked on after your comment on my blog - not expecting to see this - heartbreaking and made no less so by an unconcerned council! So sorry to see this and glad to hear that it has cleared. You wonder if there was water this deep in the council office car parks how quickly the matter would be dealt with.

3 Dec, 2009

yw Gee ;o)

3 Dec, 2009

I hope nothing was ruined, damaged or maimed with all that water Gee. Must have been awful. Excuse the lateness of my comment but been non-stop work for past few weeks so just nipping in whilst I got 5!

Hope you're well:0)

18 Dec, 2009

I am concerned about my little rowan tree but hope it will be OK.

I am beginning to think you are Father Christmas having all this extra work at this time of year :) Hope you have some time off over Christmas. Enjoy!

18 Dec, 2009

Hi Gee,

I hope your garden has recovered and that you are not now suffering too much from the cold spell.

So far we have not found any sandbags - it is something we must do something about, but it gets fogotten in the drier weather.

Cold here - below freezing ; I just hope our borders dried out or lots of plants will die.

Happy Christmas!

18 Dec, 2009

Happy Christmas, Rachelsmum and all the best for 2010. Like you I am hoping that my plants will survive. Last time I flooded it wasn't followed by freezing weather. Fingers crossed :)

I now have frozen sandbags!! Not as much snow fell here as was forecast but what we did have is now frozen so roads and pavements are treacherous. Thankfully the main roads have been gritted so are fairly safe. Take care.
