101 BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL FLOWERS

I had to tell you about this little book, what a gem, and so very cheap (Amazon) it is the kind of book you will treasure…..mainly for the way it has been written, with humour and great understanding regarding the plants it describes, let me quote a sample for you.
ROSE Rosa Peter Beales .
Flowering time June -September.
If you were ever to find yourself hang-gliding at dusk across the mouth of a volcano and happened to look down, then the sight that greeted you would be very similar to that of this flower. It has a crinoline of slightly ragged, velvet petals that are the colour of bubbling scarlet sunsets surrounding a glowing halo of molten gold.

description of rose follows, with large picture.
SWEET pea
Lathyrus odoratus ‘Katie Alice’
This sweet pea has about the best scent of anything anywhere -not just better than most other flowers, but better than newly mown grass, baking bread, brewing coffee, the heads of small babies, the biscuity paws of puppies, or the scented wrists of courtesans…………
Each plant is lovingly described which such splendid and witty humour, it is a delight to read and will brighten the dullest of days.
The book is written by James Alexander-Sinclair.

Being as it is written James Alexander-Sinclair it's not surprising the prose he uses in describing flowers! The photos are really great!
