I live in Michigan also and have three very large White Pine Trees. I have planted the ground cover 'creeping myrtle' and it looks great.
On question - What to plant under pine trees?

Beer has always worked for me. I put the cheapest I can find in shallow plastic cups all around the plants they seem to like. Good Luck!
