You Know It's Spring When ...

Do you feel you’ll ever get on top of all the jobs that need doing outside just now? Here’s a jaundiced view of spring.

Weeds start to grow and the grass shoots up six inches overnight

Dead leaves stop blowing around the neighbours’ gardens and all land in yours

Blackbirds then scatter them all over the lawn

The birds wake you up before you top up the feeder for them

When you look outside and thought you saw mist and then realised the windows need cleaning

You ruin your best trousers getting down to see inside the first snowdrop

You prune a shrub and, in stepping back to admire your handiwork, flatten a clump of daffodils about to flower

The ice on the pond is replaced by blanket weed

The rain is warmer

You see the first slug

What makes you know it’s spring?

Spring? oh, the joy that wells up inside when I hear the birds singing, the first gurglings of the solar water feature, the smell...the smell of the earth warming. The colour of new leaves....not green but a hundred different shades of green and bronze and red....and the scent of a lilac tree in full bloom. This for me, is spring!

Being able to go outside without being wrapped up in four layers . . looking up at green shoots on the trees, and buds on the shrubs . . a few flowers bravely showing their faces in unexpected places . . feeling more cheerful about life . . LOVE IT!

Just looking out of the window and seeing SUNSHINE instead of gloom, instant cheerfulness :o))
Trotting outside in my slippers because I've spotted something new that's opened 'overnight', usually it's something I'd completely forgotten about!
Great blog Andrew, are you having an Open Day this year and if so, when is it?

Wormcasts all over the lawn ... the edging shears need sharpening for another season ... birdsong waking me up instead of the alarm ringing ... the Squirrel stops planting peanuts in the borders ... putting the Winter coat away! Lovely blog, Andrew. : o )

March means cutting back shrubs and trees and not knowing what to do with the branches until the council pick up the brown bins. Lifting those early plants that have self seeded just where you don't want them and looking at all the moss you have to get rid of on the lawn.
Apart from all that I love it!!!!

Spring is when Brazen Hussy pops up all over the place.....tulips spring up in the most unexpected places, the perfume from the skimmia flowers wafts around the garden, the excitement of finding another plant has actually made it through the winter.....and OH is cutting the lawn....this is Spring to me.
Enjoyed your blog Andrew, I expect you are very busy getting your garden ready to receive this years visitors.

You know it's spring when you see crows trying to mate on your neighbour's roof-top, and they caw and caw and caw and caw and caw and caw until it drives you mad !

I kind of like Spring. I won't let a few little hiccups get me down, and I am careful where i tread when tidying up.

Summer will be great too, but I still love seeing all the different Spring bulbs first.

I just love watching everything burst into new life...and drives into the countryside to see all the baby lambs :) Aww...

I love the sunny days we're having and all the promise of what is yet come...oh, and the birdsong.

Great blog and great comments too.

I think its spring when its getting light in a morning around 6/6-30am, plus the blanket weed on the pond instead of ice. loved your blog.
