And So To Bed

With the first frosts not far off, yesterday was the day to make final preparations in my garden for winter. Some of the borderline hardy plants such as coprosmas and a couple of salvias, were lifted, potted up and brought indoors while others, like lobelia cardinalis, which can take the cold but dislike the wet, can go in the greenhouse.

A few moisture lovers that live round the edge of my pond have been lifted out of the water but will be quite happy on the edges.

This frees up bricks they were stood on which are used for the alpines. Many of these come from areas where they can tolerate the cold but are cosily tucked under snow for the winter; here they need some protection from freezing rain and soggy autumn leaves.

Later in the month, I will mulch the roots of other vulnerable plants, wrap a few others in fleece and hope the coming winter is less severe than the last one.

You really have got organised Andrew, my garden usually has to take its chances in Winter, although I don't have as many plants to care for as you seem to, and most of them are pretty hardy too - thank goodness - it looks like a lot of hard work you've been doing. Your reward will come next year when they all thank you by thriving in the coming seasons. Well done you.

My coprosmas are all tucked up in the greenhouse too. I'm not taking risks after that catastrophe, Andrew! I'm ready with the fleece for the shrubs in the beds. I think colder weather's forecast for next week, isn't it?

Spritz - colder and wetter!

Sanbaz - any plants that would naturally grow in water can be left where they are (this includes waterlilies).
The plants I have moved out are ones that would grow in moist, but not waterlogged, soil in their natural enviroment - I grow them in my pond to ensure they get enough moisture during the growing season as we are on the drier side of the country. This is mainly candelabra primulas and schizostylis. Primula viallii, arisaemas and lobelia cardinalis prefer a drier winter than we can provide so they go in the greenhouse and I have found hostas prefer it in there as well. but things like astilbes, marsh marigolds and rodgersia are perfectly happy left in the pond. Hope this helps

How did you manage to avoid those 3 frosts last month then Andrew, maybe your garden is more sheltered than mine? I didn't hear the first frost warning and so my Pennisetum wasn't brought in and it also got caught a second time a week or so later. :o( Oh well, at least I won't have to find a place indoors for it now. Your garden looks all organized and ready for the worst, as you say, let's hope it doesn't materialize.
